As we gather to celebrate this Fourth of July, we find ourselves in a uniquely perilous moment for this nation. The values we all cherish as Americans – freedom from oppression, equality and justice for all our people, and a truly representative democracy – are under attack.

You see, over the last few weeks, we’ve watched as the January 6 hearings uncovered the facts and laid bare an uncomfortable truth about the state of our nation. We learned that President Trump knowingly encouraged an armed insurrection – and we discovered just how close he was to successfully overturning the results of a free and fair election.

But the extreme, right-wing attack on our democracy did not end on January 6th – no, that was just the beginning. Since then, we’ve witnessed an outrageous assault on the right to vote, a crisis of legitimacy at the steps of the Supreme Court, and the unraveling of our most fundamental freedoms.

One thing remains clear: our democracy is fragile – and it’s going to take all of us working together to defend it.

We must continue our work towards a more perfect union. We must keep fighting for a better future. And we must never let up until every person in our country is truly free.

Well, that fight is right in front of us. Our nation, our democracy, and our freedoms are on the line. And what happens next is in our hands. Let’s get to work.
