Dear Friend,
I’ve always been proud to be an American. That is something my immigrant parents instilled in me and my brother from birth.
I was born in Philadelphia during the bicentennial year. Growing up, they took us to Washington to see the monuments. They taught us about the US Constitution and the separation of powers.
They emphasized the importance of hard work and public service, making it clear to us what our obligations were as first-generation American-born citizens. “You were born in America—don’t mess it up,” they’d say. “You won the lottery.”
I couldn’t agree more.
I’m lucky that citizenship was never something I worried about, yet I can empathize with how it must feel to be an American in spirit, but to not be a citizen based on birthplace.
DREAMers deserve their American Dream. We need to give them legal status NOW.
I know firsthand how deeply immigrants believe in and contribute to the American experience. They help strengthen our economy and enrich our culture. They, too, want a better future for their children. We can help make that possible by protecting the legal rights and status of DREAMers.

I owe everything I have to America. And because of that, I firmly believe it is our responsibility to support all Americans, current and future. We have a moral obligation to give DREAMers a pathway to citizenship, for the American Dream belongs to everyone.
