Dear John,
On July 4th, we celebrate Independence Day. Today, I am reflecting on the opportunities this country has afforded each of us. I am also reminded of the important work that remains as we fight to preserve and build upon the ideals and freedoms enshrined in our founding documents.
For nearly 250 years, the United States has been known as a democratic and humanitarian leader in the global community at the forefront of human rights, poverty eradication and diplomacy. In the face of significant challenges to our most sacred institutions we have acted to meet the moment --a feat worth celebrating.
This Independence Day, as we steady ourselves on the path to a more perfect union, I encourage you to also reflect on the freedoms we hold dear.
