America came in to being because great men of faith and strength who believed that human rights come from God and not from a faraway monarch, came together to plan a form of government of the people, by the people and for the people. Great patriots and soldiers then and through subsequent generations have defended and given their lives to protect the freedoms we see under attack today. We should have the courage to continue to respect our God and Country this Independence Day. Remember those that fought to keep us free and to preserve the American Dream. Celebrate what America represents and not what those on the left would have it become. July 4th is more than just a holiday, it is a reminder of who we are as a free nation, a remembrance of overcoming great obstacles and a celebration of a country that has dedicated itself to freeing the world from oppression. Today, there are great challenges to our freedoms. We must remain strong. The only way we can lose is if we forget who we are as free Americans. THE BIRTH OF A NATION Reclaiming the Spirit of 1776 By Newt and Callista Gingrich On Independence Day, we reflect on a remarkable moment 246 years ago, when 56 courageous leaders from 13 colonies gathered in Philadelphia to sign the Declaration of Independence. There, our founders declared with one voice: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” This act of political and moral courage changed the course of history. Since 1776, the values and ideals enshrined in the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution have been exported to democracies around the globe and have lifted millions of people out of tyranny, poverty, and oppression. Today, however, many seek to devalue America’s founding, rewrite our history, and undermine the spirit of independence that guided our founders to create the greatest, freest, and most prosperous nation on Earth. Regrettably, the Biden administration has let millions of Americans down this Independence Day. Across the country, hardworking families are struggling due to inflation, receding markets, and rising costs. So, this year, perhaps more than ever, we must remember and preserve our remarkable American story. The great experiment our founding fathers initiated in 1776 necessitates that each generation safeguards its freedom for the next. As Benjamin Franklin cautioned, we have “a Republic – if you can keep it.” The lessons of America’s independence were not meant to be left behind in 1776. Our freedom is priceless, and it must not be taken for granted. Our founders vowed to each other their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor on the principle that government must derive its power from the people. As Americans, we must honor their great courage and continue to defend life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all Americans. RPOF CHAIRMAN JOE GRUTERS ENDORSED BY TRUMP Former President Donald Trump endorsed Senator Joe Gruters last week for District 23. Gruters, a close ally of the former President, served as co-chair of the 2016 Trump campaign’s Florida division and previously referred to Trump as the “economic heavyweight champion of the world.” Gruters is preparing to square off against Michael Johnson in the general election. GOVERNOR RON DESANTIS DeSantis Signs Bill to Expand Access to Bright Futures Scholarships G “Florida students should not lose the opportunity to receive a Bright Futures Scholarship because they have to work to help their families make ends meet,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “After school jobs teach our students valuable life lessons, much like community service hours do. I am glad to sign this bill and will continue to make sure higher education remains affordable in Florida.” “When our administration took office, we vowed to invest and prioritize our state’s education and continue to open the doors to success for students of all backgrounds,” said Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nuñez. “Signing House Bill 461 is yet another testament of our administration’s continued commitment to putting students and families first. Florida is not only the free state, but it is also the education state.” “Bright Futures has provided a pathway to success for nearly one million students,” said Education Commissioner Manny Diaz, Jr. “With today’s changes to Bright Futures eligibility requirements, no student will be forced to choose between supporting their family and meeting the volunteer hours necessary to earn a scholarship. I’m proud to join Governor DeSantis today as we expand access to postsecondary education for all students.” The Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program, primarily funded by the Florida Lottery, was established in 1997 to assist students with tuition costs when pursuing a postsecondary degree. During the 2021-2022 school year, over 120,000 Florida students received Bright Futures Scholarships. Governor Announces Students Elevating their Excellence in Civics Despite Biden Administration’s Attempts to Devolve History into Squishy Theory, Florida’s Students Continue to Learn Real History and Civic Responsibility Governor DeSantis released the results of Florida’s 2022 civics assessments, demonstrating the success of Florida’s approach to educating its students on the history of our country, the exceptional nature of our form of government, and the role they play as citizens of our republic. He also announced that the Florida Civics and Debate Initiative will expand to all school districts for the upcoming school year and announced that 2,500 teachers will complete three-day civics professional development trainings by the end of July. These efforts all come as Congress considers the misleadingly titled “Civics Secures Democracy Act,” which would allow the Biden Administration to buy off states with $6 billion if they sacrifice American History for Critical Race Theory and Biden’s other political whims of the day. “While the Biden administration is seeking to award grants to indoctrinate students with ideologies like Critical Race Theory, in Florida we have focused on Civics Excellence, teaching accurate American History without an ideological agenda,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “Our students and teachers have worked hard to elevate their Civics Excellence and are proving to the nation that Florida is the national model for cultivating great citizens.” “A strong civics education is foundational to the American experience,” said Florida Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz, Jr. “Today’s scores highlight the improvements our students have made in becoming more informed and involved citizens. Thanks to the leadership of Governor DeSantis and our talented educators, Florida’s next generation will enter adulthood with the confidence and knowledge necessary to fully participate in our system of government.” Across the board, Florida’s students’ civic literacy has improved year over year. Overall, the percentage of students scoring Level 3 and above improved in social studies from 2021 to 2022. This upcoming school year there will be $1 million dedicated to the expansion of the Florida Civics & Debate Initiative. This is double last year’s funding and will enable the program to expand from 45 participating school districts at the start of 2021 to 60 school districts in 2022. By the end of this coming school year, every school district in the state should be participating in the Civics & Debate Initiative. And this November 2022 Florida will host its second National Civics and Debate Championship. Prior to the launch of this initiative, only 11 school districts offered students opportunities to participate in Speech and Debate. Over the next month, the Florida Department of Education will be hosting 10 three-day civics trainings for teachers. Teachers who participate in these civics bootcamps will have gone through up to 50 percent of the Civics Seal of Excellence training and will be on their way to receiving a $3,000 bonus. Governor Awards $15.6 Million to Increase Access to Training in Cybersecurity and IT Training Governor Ron DeSantis and Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz announced $15.6 million to expand cybersecurity and IT training in Florida. This announcement is part of Governor DeSantis’ goal to make Florida the best state in the nation for workforce education by 2030. The funding is through a joint endeavor of the Florida Department of Education and the Florida Center for Cybersecurity to inspire and prepare more students to pursue fulfilling and lucrative careers in cybersecurity/information technology while helping address a national skills shortage in these areas. The 24 projects that will be funded through this $15.6 million are anticipated to train 27,000 Florida students over the next year. Click here to view the list of awards. “We will continue to invest in ensuring Florida’s high schools and colleges offer programs that allow students to immediately enter the workforce with the ability to secure high-paying jobs,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “This funding will not only advance the educational opportunities for Florida students seeking employment in this critical field but will also create a safer and more stable cyberspace for our future generations.” Cybersecurity is one of the fastest growing and most lucrative fields in the United States. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, it is expected to grow by 33% in the next decade, which is “much faster than average.” With a median pay in six figures, students can get high-paying jobs right out of high school. “In Florida, Governor DeSantis has prioritized cybersecurity, providing resources to our institutions to meet the demand of cybersecurity professionals,” said Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz. “Raising awareness and interest in cybersecurity at the K-12 and postsecondary levels is crucial to meet the needs of businesses across Florida and create pathways for students to gain employment with a sustainable salary right after high school.” This initiative is built on the state’s CTE audit and implementation of HB 1507 to shift K-12 and postsecondary course offerings in a manner that phases out low-demand, low-wage courses and introduces more high-demand, high-wage courses and stackable credentials and pathways that best align Florida’s K-12 and postsecondary systems to workforce demands. These awards build upon the historic investment Governor DeSantis has secured in workforce education since he took office. Learn more about the program here. Governor Signs Miya’s Law to Strengthen Renters’ Safety Governor Ron DeSantis has signed Senate Bill (SB) 898, designated as “Miya’s Law”, to strengthen residential tenant safety measures including requiring background checks for prospective employees, maintaining a log for each dwelling unit’s keys, and increasing notification requirements for maintenance and repairs from 12 to 24 hours. The bill is named after Miya Marcano, a young woman and Orlando student who was tragically killed in her apartment in 2021 by a maintenance worker who entered her unit with an apartment key fob. “Every tenant deserves to be safe in their own home,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “By signing this legislation, we are making it safer to live in a rental unit and giving renters more peace of mind in their homes. Miya’s death was a tragedy, and our prayers continue to be with the Marcano family. I am proud to act on their behalf to help prevent a tragedy like that from happening to another Florida tenant.” SB 898 directs landlords or licensees of transient and non-transient apartments to require all employees undergo a background screening as a condition of employment. A person may be disqualified from employment if the person has been found guilty of certain offenses involving violence and disregard for safety. Apartments will also be required to maintain a log accounting for the issuance and return of all keys and establish policies for their issuance, return, and storage. The apartment’s key log and background screenings will be subject to the Department of Business and Professional Regulation’s annual inspection of apartments. Additionally, the bill changes the requirement for ‘reasonable notice’ for entry of a unit for maintenance and repairs from 12 hours to 24 hours’ notice. The bill also prohibits operators of public lodging establishments from offering hourly rates for an accommodation. It is the Attorney General’s goal to make Florida the #1 state in the nation for recruitment and retention of highly qualified law enforcement professionals.
