Friend – as I gather with friends and family to celebrate the anniversary of our nation's founding, I can't help but reflect on our country's promise of equity, opportunity and freedom.

When I was growing up poor in the segregated South, I never could have imagined that I'd have so many incredible opportunities – from becoming Orlando's first woman chief of police to serving as a U.S. congresswoman to running for U.S. Senate.

I truly believe that only in America can a little Black girl – the daughter of a maid and a janitor – grow up with a story of opportunity like mine. Now, I'm working toward a future where everyone has the chance to achieve their own American Dream.

You see, true patriotism means striving for a more perfect nation – one that lives up to its promises even for those most marginalized – and as you well know, we've got a long way to go.

I vow to fight every day for an America that lives up to its promise of freedom for everyone, and I'm so thankful that you've joined me on this historic grassroots campaign. Together – one volunteer, one donor and one voter at a time – we are bending the arc of history toward justice. I'm so proud of our progress, friend.

No one – not the Supreme Court, not Donald Trump and certainly not Marco Rubio – can make me give up on our country.

I wish you and your loved ones a joyous holiday weekend as we continue to work toward a better nation for all.
