John,
If you don’t feel like celebrating our “independence” day today, you’re not alone.
This year, you won’t see us wearing red, white, and blue. We’re wearing green and asking people to show up at their local courthouses to protest the decimation of our rights.
And today, we’re also looking ahead to our Day of Rage at the White House on July 9th. We know there will be arrests, just like there were at the Kavanaugh protests. If you can, please help us prepare for the Day of Rage by donating to our Jail Support Fund to support folks on the front lines >>>
How can we celebrate independence in this country when five unelected judges, three of who were appointed by a president who lost the popular vote, can strip the fundamental right to control our own bodies from millions?
And we know exactly who this decision will hurt the most. Black women who already experience a maternal mortality rate 2.9 times higher than white women; Latina, Indigenous, AAPI, and all women of color who face discrimination and systemic barriers to health care; nonbinary and trans folks who already face stigmas and large barriers to accessing health care; and low-income women who do not have the resources to cross state lines for an abortion.
Today was never meant for us. It’s okay not to celebrate a declaration, written by slave owners, that says “all men are created equal”.
But it’s also ok to still take this day as a holiday: to see friends and family, enjoy time outdoors, & rest up – we have a long fight ahead of us. And if you can, help us gear up for that fight by contributing any amount that’s right for you to our Jail Support Fund >>>
Thank you,
Rachel
