Today, we celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. This is when we, as a nation, began the journey towards equality, freedom, and justice.
The multiple decisions by the Supreme Court last month have led to a lot of engagement, people wanting to talk, and people gathering as a community. There have been a number of rallies with several thousands of people.
As we celebrate Independence Day weekend, we need to remember what our democracy stands for, that we can never take it for granted, and that it requires hard work to maintain and defend it.
A democracy relies on the participation of its citizens. All of us are responsible for participating and being engaged — not just by voting, but by getting involved in the community through many different opportunities.
Democracy requires people’s confidence that the outcome of their votes is accurate and honest. It also means that we must respect every individual and their right to make their own choices, but not those that harm others.
We cannot be complacent.
Today, I reflect on moments in the last few years and the anger, tone, disagreements among friends, and inability to have civil discourse. We can disagree and do it respectfully. Too many things have turned contentious, challenging, and honestly dangerous. Our democracy matters and as citizens each of us shares responsibilities for ensuring it endures.
We live in a country where we can take action to move our nation forward and stronger together. We must continue fighting for our country, keep the momentum of our beliefs and values, and turn those into action.
I am thankful to have you on my team as we continue this essential work to uphold the original values of freedom, justice, and equality in our country.
