Support call by African Ministers for a UN Tax Convention
------------------------------------------------------------
Together with our regional networks Tax Justice Network Africa (TJNA), Tax and Fiscal Justice Asia (TAFJA) and Red de Justicia Fiscal de Amรฉrica Latina y el Caribe (RJFALC), we invite civil society organisations from around the world to endorse the attached statement in support of the call from the African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development for a UN Tax Convention.

A UN Tax Convention would:
1. Promote democratic reforms of the international taxation framework by allowing for genuinely inclusive consultations to ensure that the interests of developing nations are represented.
2. Initiate the process of harmonising international tax agreements to eliminate their bias towards developed countries to the detriment of developing countries.
3. Foster greater collaboration between governments on tax matters in a fair, transparent and accountable manner. This would also enhance greater coordination and coherence between institutions and ultimately have tax issues administered under one framework.
In March, we launched with Eurodad a civil society proposal for a UN Tax Convention. A UN Tax Convention would create a truly global framework where all countries can participate on an equal footingm, and link international tax governance to other key global commitments and obligations -- including human rights, equality, environmental protection and the SDGs.

"Tax governance leaves much room for improvement and getting tax systems right is a key lever for realising the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development. The discussion about a UN Tax Convention is moving from a question of 'Should we have one?' to 'How would we do it?'," highlighted Tove Maria Ryding (Eurodad) and Bodo Ellmers (Global Policy Forum) in an article.
