** The 4th of July, a truly special holiday.

Growing up overseas, the 4th of July had special meaning. It was a celebration of home and a chance to pridefully share with friends and locals what it meant to be American. Even before I properly understood our founding, I knew that being American meant being synonymous with Liberty, and a freedom to believe in and pursue the accomplishments of dreams. Admittedly, as a young boy watching the Olympics and other American accomplishments overseas, it was also a chance to remind all “We’re number 1!!” One exception, I lived briefly in Brazil, and knew that argument wasn’t going to work during the soccer. Yet somehow, it is core of what it means to be American that in our hearts we’re confident we’ll be the best in the world at that too.

As I grew older, I of course realized being American was much more than putting on patriotic gear and rooting our nation on. It meant that we were, and still are, part of the greatest social experiment in human history. That a tiny nation, built by brave men and women in the 1700s, had an audacity to believe that no person was subject to rule by a monarchy, and that it is in fact the governed who determine their fates. It is the governed who determine the laws of their own wishes. This vision was more powerful than the strongest King in the world, and thus modern democracy was born. This is why being an American is so preciously unique, for as Reagan reminded us, we are “the shining city upon a hill” for the world to take its guidance from.

I wish everyone a healthy and safe 4th of July wherever you are celebrating! A special thank you to our military forces who keep us safe, sacrifice time with their families so that us at home can celebrate yet another American Birthday! 🇺🇸 🦅 🗽 🇺🇸
