Dear Resident,

It’s been another busy week with some key legislation now coming into force. The Policing Act is now in force ensuring whole life sentences for killing an on duty emergency worker; increased prison terms for child cruelty; life sentences for killer drivers and new powers for the police to stop protestors who block our roads. The Borders Act, providing maximum life sentences for people smugglers and boat pilots; increased prison time for people entering our country illegally; new powers to remove failed asylum seekers and foreign offenders has also come into force.

We also celebrated ‘National Care Home Week’ and, as in previous years, I took the opportunity to visit local care homes. At Victoria Park Care Home in Ilkeston, I had the difficult task of judging the cakes. Even though I enjoy baking, I definitely don’t have the talent shown by those who baked and decorated the cakes. My favourite one was decorated with strawberries which I thought was a great way to feel that even quite a large slice could be healthy!

It was also the first post-pandemic Erewash Partnership Networking event at Erewash Valley Golf Club. There was definitely a buzz in the air as everyone renewed their acquaintances. It was really good to see business being discussed and business cards exchanged. My thanks go to the team at Erewash Partnership for organising the event and ensuring it ran so smoothly.

The conflict in Ukraine continues and the actions directly sanctioned by Putin are just so horrendous. With the bombing of a shopping centre and a block of flats over the last few days, with the associated sad loss of life, I’m sure, like me, our hearts go out to those families affected in whatever way, especially those who have lost loved ones. Whilst the UK cannot get directly involved in the conflict, we are playing our part in providing equipment and the associated training. With defence spending protecting the UK, our allies and creating jobs, I welcome the Prime Minister’s announcement that we will be strengthening Britain’s defence by increasing spending to 2.5 per cent of GDP by 2030.

Whether you are a Derby County fan or not, I’m sure you will be as relieved as I am to know that it has now been acquired by Clowes Developments (UK) Ltd and the Club can start the season with new owners. To me, Derby County is more than a football club and the benefits it brings are far wider than just the football.

With best wishes for the week ahead,
Maggie Throup MP
Member of Parliament for Erewash
