Over 1000 of us have already contacted our local MP candidates to raise the alarm
John, it’s a worrying trend we need our next government to stop.11% of free-to-use cash machines in the UK have shut in a year. [1]
Over 1000 of us have already contacted our local MP candidates to raise the alarm about free cash machines closing, and ask them what they’ll do to stop it if they’re elected. And the message is starting to get through - we’ve seen some encouraging replies from some candidates across the Labour, Conservative, Green and Liberal Democrat parties.
But this isn’t enough. Together we need to make sure that every single MP candidate across the country has heard from their constituents about this before next week’s election. John, please will you be the one to email your candidates in your constituency? There’s a ready-made email so it'll take less than 1 minute:
The last government stood by and let this happen. Together we can make sure the next one doesn't.
Thank you for all you do,
Hannah, Rachel and the rest of the Positive Money team
Here’s the email I sent you about this last week with more information:
Dear John,
Did you know we’ve lost 5,644 free-to-use cash machines across the country in just 12 months? [1] It’s because the big banks and card companies are chasing bigger profits, and - worse still - because until now the government’s stood by and let it happen.
Most people rely on cash every day. [2] Positive Money believes people should be able to access their own money for free, not have to pay for the privilege.
This election is our opportunity to persuade whoever makes up the next government to stop our cash machines closing. While running for election, politicians are trying to get as many votes as possible. So if thousands of us contact our MP candidates now, together we can show them this is a vote-deciding issue.
John, please will you email your local candidates in your constituency now to tell them to stop free-to-use cash machines closing? There’s ready-made text, so it'll take you less than 2 minutes:
In the last year we’ve lost 5,644 free-to-use cash machines - that’s 11% of the total across the UK.But in order to have a functioning democracy and fair economy, our money system should be free and open to everyone, not plagued with barriers and inequalities.
Positive Money believes we need much more democracy in our economy - so that it works for everyone. That’s why thousands of us fought to keep RBS in public hands and why we’re pushing for much more transparency at the Bank of England. [3] As our only true form of public money left, protecting cash and coins must now be our next goal. [4]
With less than three weeks to go until the election, we don’t have long to make sure our next government protects our access to cash. When thousands of us act together, it adds up to something big. John, please will you help by emailing your MP candidates in your constituency now?
Past governments have stood by and let this happen. Together let’s make sure the next one doesn’t.
Thank you for all you do,
Hannah, Rachel and the rest of the Positive Money team
P.S. Please email us at [email protected] to let us know if any of your candidates reply to your email! It’s really helpful for the office team to learn where candidates stand on this issue so we can plan next steps.
