Dear John,
On June 24th, 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court, in a 6-3 decision, overturned Roe v. Wade and turned back the clock fifty years on women’s rights. I’m outraged. Young women today have less freedom than their mothers and grandmothers—that’s just wrong.
A woman’s health decisions are her own to make, in consultation with her faith and her doctor — not to be dictated by extremist politicians. Let’s be clear, this isn’t just about abortion, it’s about controlling women and imposing an extremist agenda on the entire country. We’re already seeing some states explore laws that would ban women from traveling to other states to seek an abortion.
As your representative in Congress, I will never stop working to restore Roe v. Wade as the law of the land. And in the coming days, we will take steps to protect other rights that the Supreme Court has signaled are in jeopardy: access to contraception and same-sex marriage.
This week, the Supreme Court also sided with fossil fuel companies and their allies, limiting the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from effectively addressing climate pollution from power plants and undermining the Clean Air Act. Today's ruling is a warning that these companies will not back down in their fight to undermine our ability to fight climate change, giving the Supreme Court dangerous veto power over the will of the people and the branches of government accountable to them.
Thanks,
Pete Aguilar Member of Congress
