Gov. Justice announces Woody Williams as first inductee into the new West Virginia Military Hall of Fame ([link removed])

On Thursday, Gov. Justice announced that Hershel “Woody” Williams has become the first-ever inductee into the new West Virginia Military Hall of Fame.

A native of Quiet Dell, WV, Williams was America’s last surviving World War II Medal of Honor recipient. He passed away on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, surrounded by his family at the VA hospital near Huntington named in his honor. He was 98 years old.

Gov. Justice also issued a proclamation, ordering that all United States and West Virginia flags on all State-owned facilities be displayed at half-staff, continuing through sunset on Monday, July 4, 2022.

All West Virginians are invited to honor and celebrate the distinguished life of America’s last World War II Medal of Honor recipient – West Virginia native Hershel “Woody” Williams – during memorial services July 2-3, 2022.

Williams will Lie In State at the Capitol Rotunda for a public viewing window, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Saturday.

Gov. Justice issued a statement Thursday after the Supreme Court of the United States’ decision in West Virginia v. EPA:

“I applaud the Supreme Court’s decision today in West Virginia v. EPA.

“This ruling in favor of West Virginia will stop unelected bureaucrats in Washington, D.C. from being able to unilaterally decarbonize our economy just because they feel like it. Instead, members of Congress who have been duly elected to represent the will of the people across all of America will be allowed to have a rightful say when it comes to balancing our desire for a clean environment with our need for energy and the security it provides us."

Gov. Justice announces award of Corridor H earthwork project in Tucker County; a Roads to Prosperity project ([link removed])

Gov. Justice announced Tuesday that he has approved a bid award for construction of an approximately 3-mile section of Corridor H in Tucker County; a major project in Gov. Justice's Roads to Prosperity program. A.L.L. Construction Inc. was the lowest of five bidders for the project, with a bid of $49,488,494. An additional 15 percent of the bid amount will be added to the bid and set aside for erosion and sediment control to protect the environment.

Gov. Justice, WVDED announce German packaging manufacturer Papier-Mettler acquires industrial building in Moorefield ([link removed])

On Tuesday, Gov. Justice and the West Virginia Department of Economic Development announced that Papier-Mettler, a German packaging manufacturer, has acquired an industrial building in Moorefield, WV, and will invest $48 million and create up to 100 new jobs in the area. The industrial space, acquired in May, is the first Papier-Mettler production plant in the United States.

Gov. Justice debuts Capitol Circle as newest route of West Virginia’s Mountain Rides program ([link removed])

Gov. Justice held a ceremony Thursday to announce the newest scenic route of the Mountain Rides program – Capitol Circle – a scenic loop that will take travelers along Route 60 East through the southern portion of the state. Capitol Circle marks the second route of the West Virginia Mountain Rides program, a collaborative partnership between the West Virginia Department of Transportation and the West Virginia Department of Tourism to designate and promote the Mountain State’s most scenic country roads.

West Virginia governor authorizes Guard state active duty for COVID response ([link removed])

The West Virginia National Guard’s longest federal mission ended July 1, 2022, when the COVID-19 response mission transitions from federal to state-level after more than two years. WVNG Adjutant General, Maj. Gen. William “Bill” Crane, said Gov. Justice authorized the activation of 60 West Virginia National Guard personnel to State Active Duty (SAD) status, continuing COVID-19 support around the Mountain State through September 2022.

Contracts to install ADA-compliant curb cuts in 12 communities around West Virginia are among 10 projects awarded by the West Virginia Division of Highways on Wednesday, June 29. The projects were awarded from a bid letting held Tuesday, June 14, 2022.

118 free smoke alarms installed in 60 Huntington residences ([link removed])

On Wednesday, June 22, the Marshall Football Team, the West Virginia Fire Marshal's Office, the American Red Cross, the City of Huntington, and the Huntington Fire Department worked together to install 118 smoke alarms into 60 residences in the Fairfield community of Huntington. All residents who enrolled in the Fairfield Community Smoke Alarm Installation Program received a free smoke alarm with a ten-year battery life.

West Virginia Turnpike gears up for safe travel as holiday traffic is expected to top 1 million vehicles ([link removed])

With holiday traffic on the West Virginia Turnpike expected to top 1 million vehicles during the 11 days surrounding the July 4, holiday, the West Virginia Parkways Authority is bringing in extra staff and law enforcement to ensure a safe, efficient driving experience.

To minimize wait time at the toll booths, drivers should plan ahead and try to organize their trips during non-peak hours.
