President Trump might be out of office, but his stacked Supreme Court ensures his legacy lives on.
Last month, the Supreme Court curbed the Environmental Protection Agency's ability to limit greenhouse gas emissions to combat climate change. The Court overturned Roe v. Wade , ending nearly fifty years of legal precedent that protected the right to safe and legal abortion. And Justice Clarence Thomas stated the Court needs to "reevaluate" the right to same-sex marriage and contraception.
John, our civil rights are under attack.
Today is the anniversary of President Lyndon B. Johnson signing the Civil Rights Act of 1964 into law. Nearly six decades later, right-wing extremists at the state and federal level are actively trying to turn back the clock by any means necessary.
In the face of these attacks, Dwight helped pass the Equality Act to end discrimination based on sexual identity and orientation. He fought to codify the right to an abortion into federal law and passed legislation that would restore and expand the Voting Rights Act of 1965. He stood up to the gun lobby and repeatedly introduced, co-sponsored, and passed essential gun safety legislation.
While extremists play games with our rights, Dwight and the Democratic House Majority have repeatedly been the voice of the American people.
Right now, we are angry, but we are also determined. To honor those who fought so hard to make the Civil Rights Act a reality, we need to make our voices heard at the ballot box.
