The religious right has a lot to celebrate this weekend. They have won several Supreme Court cases in recent weeks. With six conservative justices the Court has become, according to the New York Times, the most pro-religion Court in seven decades.
The most egregious win was the case of Kennedy v. Bremerton in which a high school coach was given the right to pray on the field after games with players. This was decided wrongly on so many levels. In fact, the majority on the Court ignored photographic evidence that there was a crowd of his players around the coach and said he had the right to private, personal prayer.
Justice Sotomayor described it best in her dissent, stating that the Court’s decision “elevates one individual’s interest in personal religious exercise, in the exact time and place of that individual’s choosing, over society’s interest in protecting the separation between church and state, eroding the protections for religious liberty for all.”
We need to stand up and take action to defend the separation of religion and government. If the Supreme Court will not protect us, we need to work with our allies in Congress to create laws and national policies that will. That is what we do.
Your contribution this weekend will have double the impact on our work. A generous donor will match all contributions made over the Fourth of July weekend, empowering us to maintain and rebuild the wall between religion and government.
Please make a donation today ([link removed]) ; your donation will go twice as far thanks to a matching gift available this weekend.
