This Month in History
On December 2, 1980, NPCA worked with a coalition of partners in Alaska to secure the passage of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act. This landmark legislation represented nearly nine years of work and protected more than 100 million acres of wild and nationally significant lands, including 43.6 million acres of new national park land, more than doubling the size of the National Park System. It remains the largest expansion of protected lands in U.S. history.
Quote of the Month
"If the day and the night are such that you greet them with joy, and life emits a fragrance like flowers and sweet-scented herbs, is more elastic, more starry, more immortal — that is your success. All nature is your congratulation, and you have cause momentarily to bless yourself."
— Henry David Thoreau
