Do You Know the Declaration Signers?

WallBuilders' speakers work year-round to educate Americans on our religious and constitutional heritage. Sometimes they'll ask the audience to identify some of the Founders pictured in John Trumbull's famous painting (below) that hangs in the US Capitol Rotunda. Challenge yourself by seeing how many signers you can name! (See the key to find out how you did!)

Most people can recognize a few but rarely does anyone name 5 or more. There are 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence. These men pledged their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor to the cause of freedom but today they are largely unknown!

For example, how many Americans are aware that the great majority of the signers were Christians and spoke openly of their faith?

  • I [rely] upon the merits of Jesus Christ for a pardon of all my sins. (Samuel Adams)
  • On the mercy of my Redeemer I rely for salvation and on His merits, not on the works I have done in obedience to His precepts. (Charles Carroll)
  • My only hope of salvation is in the infinite transcendent love of God manifested to the world by the death of His Son upon the Cross. Nothing but His blood will wash away my sins. I rely exclusively upon it. Come Lord Jesus! Come quickly! (Benjamin Rush)
  • I [entreat] you in the most earnest manner to believe in Christ Jesus, for "there is no salvation in any other" [Acts 4:12]....If you are not reconciled to God through Jesus Christ, if you are not clothed with the spotless robe of His righteousness, you must forever perish. (John Witherspoon)

To find out more about the signers' inspiring stories visit the WallBuilders' Signers of the Declaration Resource Page. You can also read WallBuilders' reprint of the 1848 Lives of the Signers. (And find out about their wives' stories of courage too in our reprint of the 1912 Wives of the Signers.)

As we celebrate Independence Day, take some time to read the Declaration of Independence and then study one of the signers you do not know.
