Weekend Reading
Dear John,
Thank you to everyone who contacted President Biden and Congress, urging them to protect migrant lives and end Title 42. This year alone, at least 290 migrants have died trying to cross the U.S.-Mexico border, including those found in San Antonio this week. Not one more life should be lost. If you haven’t already, contact your elected officials today [link removed]] .
Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism:
The Biden administration must do more to address root causes of migration: [link removed] At the start of the Biden administration last year, AFSC’s team in Latin America wrote about how U.S. policies have historically worsened conditions for people in the region. We also called on President Biden to take concrete steps to address the root causes and migration. Today, these demands are as urgent as ever.
Calling for climate justice: [link removed] This week, the Supreme Court issued a ruling to limit the EPA’s ability to regulate and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The decision undermines efforts to address the climate crisis, which disproportionately hurts Black, Indigenous, and other people of color worldwide. It also further highlights the need for President Biden and Congress to act now for climate justice, writes AFSC’s Peniel Ibe.
4 things you should know about the incarceration of LGBTQ+ people: [link removed] June 28 marked the 53rd anniversary of the Stonewall uprising in response to police violence targeting queer and trans communities. Five decades later, LGBTQ+ people are still disproportionately represented in the U.S. criminal legal system, writes AFSC’s Keyvan Shafiei. Learn more and check out our toolkit [link removed] with ways to support LGBTQ+ people in prisons, jails, and detention centers.
Take action : End the blockade on Gaza: [link removed] It’s been over 15 years since Israel imposed its military blockade on Gaza. Today the humanitarian crisis is worsening—with more than 80% of Palestinians in Gaza dependent on international assistance to survive. The U.S. can help to end this situation. Tell your representatives to call for an immediate end to the blockade. To learn more, visit AFSC’s Gaza Unlocked site [link removed] .
Stories from incarcerated people and their loved ones: [link removed] Every human being has dignity, and everyone has the capacity to grow and change. But right now, there are tens of thousands of people serving life or long sentences in the U.S.—denied the chance to come home to their loved ones and communities. In Michigan, AFSC and partners launched a storytelling initiative to share some of these first-person stories as part of our ongoing work to end death by incarceration.
A guide to protesting: [link removed] Protests are a powerful way for individuals to raise a strong, collective voice before policymakers who hold our lives and well-being in the balance. Explore and use these protest resources compiled by AFSC and partners to prepare, stay safe, and get your message across.
