Hi neighbors,
First: We have a date for July's Brianne On Your Block. Join us in Adams Morgan on Monday, July 11 from 6:30-8:00 PM. Look for a venue and more details in an email next week.
As we get ready for the Fourth of July, it's time to talk about fireworks.
We've all heard them in our neighborhoods by now — they're one of the sounds of summer here, and not always a welcome (or legal) one, especially for those of us with children or pets. I encourage constituents to share concerns around fireworks and locations. It helps us identify hot spots to proactively address.
There are a few things to know about fireworks here.
Many fireworks are illegal in the District
If you're thinking about adding fireworks to your Fourth of July festivities, read MPD's fireworks guidelines first. Generally, these types of fireworks are banned here:
Any firework that moves or shoots a projectile
Any firework that explodes, like firecrackers, M-80s, salutes, or cherry bombs
Any firework that emits sparks and/or flames over 12 feet, like fountains and roman candles
The District has stricter laws than some neighboring states and counties, so that's where people go to buy fireworks that are banned here. This makes enforcement a challenge every year. But it leads us to the next point:
Don't buy, sell, or use prohibited fireworks
The sale or possession of illegal fireworks comes with a penalty of up to $2000.
MPD can respond to active fireworks incidents. Residents can also report someone selling illegal fireworks to the Fire Marshal's Office at (202) 727-1614 or email: [email protected].
Watch the fireworks here in Ward 1
The fireworks on the National Mall are an annual tradition — and they can be seen from roofs and high points in Ward 1 like Meridian Hill Park and Cardozo Education Campus! Many other fireworks displays in our area can be seen in several directions. The Friends of the Soldier's Home is also hosting a celebration, with free entrance on foot or by bicycle.
