Hi John,

Since October 2020 we have been working on the proposal for temporary suspension of monopolies over Covid-19 vaccines, tests and treatments. We knew it was going to be a tough challenge – we are fighting for justice, not charity for the global south. And pharmaceutical companies are fighting to guard the extraordinary profits they’ve amassed on the back of public funding.

Last year, G7 leaders made bold pledges on vaccine donations while refusing measures to allow manufacturers the world over to increase production of these vital life-saving technologies. Last week we found out that less than half of the promised donations have materialised, costing an estimated 600 000 unnecessary deaths.(1) Goodwill gestures will never be enough.

So, over the next few months we’re turning up the heat on pharmaceutical companies. Watch and share our video from Pfizer’s AGM protest action to get started.

This summer, our members will be talking to communities up and down the country about the inefficient, immoral and unsustainable way pharmaceutical companies operate.

We will continue to ramp up the pressure on Pfizer to make sure their antiviral treatment for Covid-19, Paxlovid, is available across the world, and not just in the handful of rich countries that have already bought up most of the available pills. We will be sounding the alarm that monopolising pharmaceutical knowledge leaves us ill-prepared for current and future pandemics. And we will continue to support our allies in the global south who are working to build a new, independent pharma model, based on sharing knowledge, not profits.

International bodies such as the World Trade Organisation may be willing to give pharmaceuticals a free pass to rake in billions with zero accountability for needless deaths, but we are not. We won’t let pharma off the hook. We will be there to counter their spin and to help bring about a new pharmaceutical system that works for the many, not the few.

Help ensure Covid-19 vaccines are available to everyone, everywhere

It’s vitally important that Covid-19 vaccine patents are suspended during the pandemic, and for big pharma to share their know-how globally, as the best way of ensuring there are enough vaccines for everyone everywhere.

Regular gifts give us the long-term stability to plan effective campaigns and the flexibility to respond to crises like these.
