‌ ‌ ‌ Weekly Wrap Up Friend, In 1776, our Founding Fathers launched the great American experiment and established an independent nation where the people elect and speak through their representatives and where individual liberties are sacred. Now, 246 years later, our democracy is a beacon of hope around the world. As we head into Fourth of July weekend, we are reminded of the many blessings, opportunities, and freedoms we enjoy as Americans. “The Fourth of July, the epoch of American independence, is a day when the heart of every American must glow with pride and gratitude.” - Thomas Jefferson I'll never stop defending our Constitution and fighting to preserve the ideals upon which our nation was founded. I hope you have a great Fourth of July weekend! Read on for more information about my work serving Iowans this week. Best, 30 Town Halls & Poll Results This week, I hosted my eighth telephone town tall hall event, connecting with thousands of Iowans on the phone. This was my tenth virtual town hall event, and I've held an in-person town hall in all twenty counties of Iowa's First Congressional District, marking thirty town halls total! Agree or disagree, Iowans will always know where I stand on issues that matter to them. With the many challenges facing our country right now, there is nothing more valuable to me than hearing from those I represent. During my telephone town hall, I heard from folks who are worried about the direction this Administration is taking our country, provided a recap of my recent travel to the Southern Border, and answered questions on a wide variety of topics including inflation, gas prices, and the baby formula shortage. I also asked those on the call what issue they want me to prioritize in Congress, as well as if they agreed with the Biden Administration's proposal to "cancel" student loan debt, and promised to share the results in this week's e-newsletter. Here they are: What issue do you want me to prioritize in Congress? Inflation and Rising Costs: 42% Energy Policy: 21% Border Security: 15% National Security and Foreign Affairs: 12% Education Policy: 10% Do you agree with the Biden Administration's proposal to "cancel" student loan debt? Yes: 13% No: 87% Iowans' feedback will always drive my work in Washington--thank you to everyone who joined the discussion this week! Recap: House Appropriations Markups This week, I was in Washington working for Iowans during House Appropriations Committee markups of the fiscal year 2023 spending bills. I advocated for responsible spending, resources for border security, and pushed back against government overregulation of Iowa farmers. By introducing career and technical education (CTE) programs and science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education earlier in school curriculums, as well as motivating students to pursue related degrees and certifications, we will connect people with meaningful employment, help end the worker shortage, and begin to get our economy back on the right track.
