The Village's Real Estate Transfer Tax referendum passed with approximately 60% of voters approving the measure. Kendall and Will Counties are expected to officially certify the election results in mid-July. Oswego is determining when the Real Estate Transfer Tax will take effect, most likely on August 1, 2022.
The new Real Estate Transfer Tax will apply only to NEW BUYERS of Oswego property and the tax will be collected as part of the real estate closing. The Village Board has already passed an ordinance exempting current homeowners from having to pay the tax if they move to another residential property within Oswego. The ordinance also requires that all Real Estate Transfer Tax proceeds must be deposited in the Water & Sewer Fund and can only be used for construction and maintenance Oswego's water system.
The Village will announce the process for obtaining the transfer stamp for those impacted before the requirement goes into effect. View additional information here.??
