U.S. Supreme Court Decision Empowers Christian Parents and Schoolchildren
Friday, July 1, 2022
Dear Friends,
Days ago, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of millions of families for the cause of genuine school choice across America.
Since over half of Maine’s school districts do not have a public high school, Maine operates a program whereby these school districts pay tuition to families for their high school students to attend a public or private school. Maine residents Amy and David Carson applied for the tuition program to send their daughter to Bangor Christian School but were denied tuition funds. Why?
In 1981, the Maine Legislature passed a law that barred “sectarian” schools from receiving program funds. A school is “sectarian” if it “promotes [a] faith or belief system . . . or presents the material taught through the lens of this faith.”
The Carson family courageously challenged this discriminatory law all the way to the Supreme Court! And days ago, the Supreme Court agreed with the Carsons, releasing an opinion that affects over 37 states with “no-aid” provisions similar to Maine’s in their state constitutions.
Carson v. Makin reaffirmed a simple principle grounded in the U.S. Constitution: the government must not discriminate based on religion. The Supreme Court stated, “The benefit is tuition at a public or private school selected by the parent, with no suggestion that the ‘private school’ must somehow provide a ‘public’ education.”
PJI applauds this important and correct decision!
For 25 years, PJI has been on the front lines for the preservation of parental rights and religious freedoms in schools. With offices now in 18 states, PJI’s attorneys are perfectly positioned across the country to aggressively defend this new Supreme Court decision on behalf of parents. Would you consider a generous donation to PJI today so we can continue to guard religious freedoms that are increasingly under attack?
As parents search for alternatives to government-run schools that force-feed their children progressive dogma, PJI works one-on-one with private Christian schools and pastors to set up church/homeschool co-ops, so that children can receive an education without the bombardment of woke ideology.
Because PJI continues to be the most cost-effective legal defense organization in the country, your financial gift to PJI today directly helps parents and students who have nowhere else to turn.
