Dear Friend
All this week we have been proud to lift up our partners at the national domestic workers alliance who have been fighting hard for a DC Domestic Workers Bill of Rights.
Today we received the very concerning news that Chairman Mendelson has arbitrarily decided to take this bill out of the unilateral jurisdiction of the Labor and Workforce Development Committee, and Instead refer it sequentially to the Committee on Government Operations and Facilities, the committee on Labor and Workforce Development and then the Committee on Business and Economic Development You can read more in this memo from Councilmember Silverman and this Washington City Paper article.
This could significantly delay the passage of this bill and makes it likely that the bill will not be voted on before this council session ends at the end of the year. Chairman Mendelson has provided no explanation for this decision.
Please take action TODAY to let Chairman Mendelson know that we do not want to see the passage of this bill delayed at all. Domestic workers need protections NOW and have already been waiting long enough.
We are asking you to 1) tweet at Chairman Mendelson 2) Email Chairman Mendelson 3) Email the other councilmembers that co-introduced the bill and ask them to tell the Chairman not to delay this bill.
Click on this document to find a sample tweet and emails to send or adapt.
We stand firmly with DC's domestic workers in the face of attempts to stall their fight to gain protections, join us!
In Solidarity,
Yael Shafritz
