Dear neighbor,
As you may know, this week, the January 6th Committee held another hearing to present new evidence and receive witness testimony, this time from Cassidy Hutchinson, an aide to former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows. In her testimony, Ms. Hutchinson revealed disturbing information about the behavior of the former President and other White House officials on the days leading up to the January 6th attack on the Capitol, and the day of. Her testimony under oath showed the former President knew he was inciting an armed insurrection. The information she shared is important for the American people to hear. If you missed it, I encourage you to watch the full committee hearing here.
Yesterday, I was pleased to see Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson sworn in as the first Black woman to be a Supreme Court Justice. She is imminently qualified for the role and our country is fortunate to have her perspective on the court. Yet, despite this historic moment, I must acknowledge what a disastrous week it has been regarding Supreme Court decisions. I came to Congress in 2015 specifically to tackle climate change – and I am dismayed at the Supreme Court’s ruling yesterday that will limit the EPA’s ability to curb fossil fuel emissions. I will be working with my colleagues to evaluate ways we can take congressional action to ensure a clean energy future.
Here’s a look at what I’ve been working on:
- Led a letter with fellow California Aerospace Caucus Co-Chair Rep. Ken Calvert urging the Air Force to locate the U.S. Space Force’s (USSF) Space Training and Readiness Command (STARCOM) permanent headquarters in California.
- Met with a group of Ukrainians, including pilots, about getting Ukraine the weapons systems it needs to defend itself. I’ll continue to do everything I can to support Ukraine.
- Congratulated Harry, the winner of our 2022 Congressional Art Competition! I look forward to seeing his amazing artwork displayed in the U.S. Capitol.
- Gave a speech on the House floor about the difference between Democrats and Republicans.
- Sat down with LA Review of Books to discuss my bill, the 21st Century Federal Writers’ Project Act, to create a new grant program administered by the Department of Labor to hire America’s unemployed and underemployed journalists and writers. Read the full interview here.
