Dear John,
In the brownstone-lined streets of Park Slope, Brooklyn … the progressive flame burned on. Brad Lander had long before realized that Democratic domination in Washington would never lead to radical transformation. On the federal level, there would always be pushback from moderates and red America. So, in 2012, he began mobilizing progressive city leaders across the country to explore what might be accomplished at the local level.
This isn’t fiction, it is a true story about Brad’s creative vision and dedication to building progressive power. But it wasn’t published in The Nation or The New York Times.
This week The Spectator USA, a pro-Trump, conservative news magazine, published an article (“In 2020, Trump must save the cities: Progressive leadership is destroying urban America”) highlighting Brad’s efforts to grow the progressive movement in NYC and around the country. But of course, they make it sound like a bad thing!

The article continues:
That year Local Progress was born, a national network of far-left activists that today operates in 46 states under the umbrella of the Center for Popular Democracy…Lander, the founder of the New York City Council Progressive Caucus, is chairman of the Local Progress board. He understood that municipal elections are won by well-mobilized activists because voter turnout tends to be so low…
The result has been a shift in power into the hands of city leaders…in a few short years, this new class of leadership has wreaked immense havoc.
The Spectator is not known for telling the truth. But Brad did indeed help to create and grow Local Progress, which now includes 1,000+ progressive local elected officials across the country, who have won many battles against right-wing forces, helping workers win a $15 minimum wage and fair work week, expanded tenants rights and affordable housing, and adopted ambitious local policies to combat climate change.
The rest of the article argues for Trump to focus on taking back cities for Red America, veering into racist stereotypes and fear mongering. You don’t need to read it. But we wanted to make sure you got this message:
Brad is a visionary organizer, creative movement-builder, and collaborative legislator. We need people like him in office, people who are committed to making government work for all people and to building a movement to make that possible. Brad is running for citywide office, and he needs your help to get there. Will you give $10 today to help Brad continue his work? [[link removed]]
Thank you,
Team Lander
P.S. Even with all Local Progress members have been able to achieve at the local level, the Trump Administration continues to wreak real havoc on the lives of millions of people.
And the attacks will keep coming unless we stop them. Will you give today to help Brad fight for justice and equality for all New Yorkers (and to keep collaborating with other like-minded activists across the country)? [[link removed]]
