Supreme Court rulings, the Jan 6 revelations -- it's all connected

Indivisibles,

It feels like we’ve gotten bad news after bad news after bad news the last few months. We’re proud of how Indivisibles have responded -- jumping in to take action after breaking updates, reaching out to care for our communities, and holding leaders accountable.

Right now we want to take a step back to dig into how all these moving pieces are connected and what you can do about it. One thing we can say up front: We have to fight like hell to expand progressive margins this November, and we’re spending millions of dollars to do just that. If you’re ready to chip in, click here to donate $10 right now. For more info on what’s happening and our plan, read on.

At the top of many of our minds is the string of overtly political, catastrophically regressive rulings from the Supreme Court.

  • Just yesterday, the Court voted 6-3 to gut the EPA’s mandate, preventing it from regulating greenhouse gasses and combating climate change.
  • In the already-infamous Dobbs case, the extremists on the Court overturned Roe v. Wade, allowing the GOP to deny millions of people abortion care and setting the stage for rollbacks of privacy, same-sex relationships and marriage, contraceptive access, and other constitutional rights we’ve relied on for decades.
  • The Court constrained Miranda rights, shielding law enforcement officers from liability when they fail to read civilians their rights.

They also ruled, just weeks after the Uvalde mass shooting when dozens of children and teachers were killed, and the Buffalo mass shooting, where the victims were explicitly targeted because they were Black, to prevent states from passing common-sense gun safety laws.

Even while all these rulings have been coming down, we’ve been watching the public hearings of the House committee investigating the January 6 insurrection. And it’s become increasingly clear that Trump and his associates in the GOP planned and incited a violent coup -- and if they have another opportunity to regain power, they’ll do it again.

Taken altogether, these developments point to our institutions unraveling at an alarming pace -- trust in the Supreme Court is at its lowest ever, Republicans are holding the checks and balances of the three branches of government hostage, and even the peaceful transfer of power is far from a guarantee anymore.

So what do we do about it?

We celebrated alongside many of you yesterday when Ketanji Brown Jackson was sworn in to become the first Black woman on the bench in the Supreme Court’s 233-year history. And, as we’ve been saying for months, we cannot lay the responsibility and expectations to fix our broken judiciary -- our broken government -- at her feet.

The moment we’ve found ourselves in is the culmination of a decades-long project in the Republican party, and we’re not going to fix it overnight. But we have to get started right now. It’s going to take massive reforms to bring us back from the brink, and we’re fighting against powerful forces who want us to fail.

The Supreme Court has been taken over by MAGA extremists -- so we must expand the Court to restore balance. The GOP is working to ban abortion completely in states and eventually at the national level -- so we must work to pass legislation to codify and protect access. All of this is going to mean doing away with the filibuster so a GOP extremist minority can’t block our progress, which in turn means we need more and stronger champions in both chambers  of Congress.

That’s why we’re so focused on winning in November. And it’s why we’re spending over $3 million to make it happen. We need your help: Our movement has beaten back Republican extremists before, and we can do it again with support from the grassroots. Click here to chip in $10 to Give No Ground so we can fight for strong progressives who will eliminate the filibuster, expand the Supreme Court, and protect our rights.

That still doesn’t answer the question of how we protect people between now and November. What can you do today to fight back and keep your communities safe? There are many answers to that question:

  • Find and donate to an abortion fund to preserve abortion access for as many people as possible.
  • Mobilize in your communities to spread the truth about the GOP’s reactionary agenda (click here to find a local Indivisible group near you, and meet friends and neighbors who are just as committed as you are to fight for our vision, our issues, and our candidates!!).
  • Talk with your loved ones, neighbors, and others in your community about what you’re seeing, why it’s so crucial not to give in, and how you can work together to solve problems -- and stay tuned for more guidance on how to have those conversations.

No matter how you choose to speak up at this moment, take heart that we have each other’s backs. That’s what we’re choosing to have hope in: not head-in-the-sand, “everything will be alright” hope, but hope that we will fight together and the fight will be worth it no matter what.

In solidarity,
