NEW RESULTS

New Survey Shows Garment Workers’ Income Rebounded Quickly after the Pandemic

Researchers: Atonu Rabbani, Hannah Uckat, and Christopher Woodruff

The ready-made garment (RMG) sector in Bangladesh is the main source of formal wage employment for women, which accounts for most of its 4 million workers. The results of a new survey conducted as part of the Women's Work, Entrepreneurship, and Skilling (WWES) initiative show that RMG workers experienced sharp reductions in economic well-being at the beginning of the pandemic, but their incomes rebounded quickly. However, participants’ levels of stress increased towards the end of 2020.

NEW STUDY

Satellite Technologies Can Be Used to Reduce Illegal Mining

Researcher: Santiago Saavedra

In Colombia, researchers used satellite technology and artificial intelligence to locate possible illegal mines. Researchers then disclosed the mines' locations to local and national authorities. This led to an 11 percent reduction in illegal mining in the sites and surrounding areas. Although illegal mining increased in areas not targeted by the intervention, the positive effect of the intervention was sustained, as the presence of illegal mines in both targeted and non-targeted areas decreased by 7 percent.
