[[link removed]]Dear John,

In the first case of its kind, our client Sarah Ward has just been granted
permission to take Poole Council to court for its Public Spaces Protection Order
which criminalises homelessness.

Councils have the power to create Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs)
banning activities they decide have a detrimental effect on the lives of others.
Poole is one of many local authorities to use a PSPO to ban rough sleeping and
begging – but criminal punishment can’t possibly solve homelessness.

Our case could bring about the end of these counterproductive PSPOs, but we
shouldn’t have to go to court at all. The Government can scrap the power to make
them whenever it wants, and it must be a top priority for whoever enters No 10
after the General Election.

As candidates vie for your vote, challenge them on this cruel criminalisation of
poverty.

In the UK today people are being locked up without release dates and the
intelligence agencies can spy on all of us whether or not we’re suspected of
wrongdoing. Police are using facial recognition technology on the streets, legal
aid has been decimated, and Parliament voted to scrap the EU Charter of
Fundamental Rights after Brexit.

The Liberty Manifesto lays out our key demands of everyone standing for
election, and what we will strive towards regardless of who forms the next
Government.

local candidates to task with it.

Together we have the power to change things for the better. Let’s use it.

Best Wishes,

Pippa Johnson
