** Dear Constituent,
------------------------------------------------------------
A warm welcome to this week's edition of the Denton and Reddish weekly news.
There's lots to update you on locally and in Parliament, but I just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who came together to organise the Armed Forces Day celebrations in Victoria Park last weekend. It was a wonderful day, and a great way to thank our inspiring armed service personnel past and present.
Denton and Reddish continues to stand with the people of Ukraine.
I’m supporting the British Red Cross's humanitarian effort in Ukraine along with Team Denton South ([link removed]) (who set up the gofundme page) and Cllr Allison Gwynne ([link removed]) . Please donate if you can to the fundraising page.
We hope that every donation will in some way help the people of Ukraine at this extremely traumatic time.👇

** Gwynne celebrates gardening success at Ravensfield Primary School
------------------------------------------------------------
Ravensfield Primary School celebrated its success in the Morrisons ‘It’s Good To Grow’ scheme with a visit from Andrew Gwynne MP.
Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, visited earlier this month to present the school with new gardening equipment secured through the scheme. The school received one of the highest numbers of tokens in the country and successfully secured new gardening kit including seed supplies, spades, trowels and compost.
The equipment will support pupils at the school in developing the school garden. The work will allow children to develop a closer relationship with the natural world as they get hands-on experience of growing fruit and vegetables.
Morrisons launched the ‘It’s Good to Grow’ scheme last September to help inspire children to get outdoors and learn about where food comes from. Thanks to the scheme, over 71,000 pieces of gardening equipment are now being donated to schools up and down the country including:
* 12,000 trowels
* 7,600 forks
* 2,200 watering cans
* 15,000 packets of seeds
* 2,800 pairs of gloves.
Commenting, Andrew Gwynne MP said:
“It was great to visit Ravensfield Primary School and celebrate its brilliant success in Morrisons ‘It’s Good To Grow’ scheme.
As a keen gardener, I understand the benefits that gardening can have on your mental and physical wellbeing. This new kit means that pupils can develop a beautiful school garden, and get hands-on experience of growing fruit and veg.
Well done to the students and staff at Ravensfield, and a big thanks to Morrisons for launching this scheme. It is a wonderful initiative, and will get so many kids engaged with nature!”
Ruth Dawson, Acting Headteacher at Ravensfield Primary School, said:
“It is wonderful how the school community has worked together to benefit our pupils. Thank you to all those who helped and to Morrisons for their generosity.”
Becky Teeney, Community Champion at Morrisons Dukinfield, said:
“It is very important to us at Morrisons Dukinfield that children understand where their food comes from. This equipment will allow the children at Ravensfield Primary School to build a fantastic knowledge base and grow their own food. The team at Morrisons Dukinfield look forward to seeing what the children grow over the coming weeks and months.”

** The power of community spirit - my weekly article for the Tameside Reporter
------------------------------------------------------------
One of the best parts of being an MP is seeing first-hand the activities put on by local residents. I’m really lucky that I represent a constituency with such an active community, and with a community spirit which constantly blows me away.
I reflected on this over the weekend, as I once again saw this spirit in action.
Last Saturday was Armed Forces Day – when the whole country comes together to celebrate those who have served in our Armed Forces, past and present. The community gathered for a fantastic day of celebrations at Victoria Park in Denton.
It was great to get together for the first time since COVID with people from across Tameside. I especially want to thank the volunteers from the Tameside Armed Services Community, who helped make the day possible. It was great to meet them alongside those preparing cream teas at the community centre and the various youth sections of the armed services. I hope that Tameside’s veterans who attended the celebrations could see just how much our community values the contribution they have made to the country.
This weekend I also attended Denton West End Community Library’s community festival. It was a great event, and I was pleased to unveil their new Dane Bank mosaic. Organisations like the library are a brilliant example of what can be achieved when people come together, and it wouldn’t exist without the work of its dedicated group of volunteers.
Finally, I have always believed that the heart of our community in Tameside is the Tame Valley. We are so lucky to have such a wonderful area of nature running through our borough, and it’s so important that we conserve it. I’d like to thank all the volunteers who give their time to help protect the Tame Valley. In particular, I’d like to give a mention to Chris Clarke, from the River Tame Anglers and the Friends of the Tame Valley, who has been busily picking up rubbish in Jet Amber Fields ahead of his meeting with the Environment Agency this week on River Pollution.
Tameside’s community spirit is thriving. From helping other people, to helping our environment, people in Tameside who give up their time to volunteer are so valuable, and it’s important we give them the thanks they deserve.

** Unveiling the Dane Bank Mosaic 📚
------------------------------------------------------------
I had a lovely morning on Satuday at Denton West End Community Library ([link removed]) ’s Community Festival, where I was asked to unveil the brilliant Dane Bank mosaic.
There was lots going on throughout the day including street theatre, performances by Denton Brass ([link removed]) and the local community choir. 🎶
** Armed Forces Day 🇬🇧
------------------------------------------------------------
I then had a brilliant afternoon in Denton’s Victoria Park for Armed Forces Day ([link removed]) .
It was great to see the family fun day return (after an absence because of the pandemic) and the weather was glorious for it! ☀️
There was lots of family fun to be had in Victoria Park and the Civic Square. I was also pleased to sample some cream teas in the community centre too!
All a fab way of saying a big thank you to our armed service personnel and their families.

** FareShare & Tesco working to help local people 🛒
------------------------------------------------------------
I want to live in a world where Food Banks are no longer a thing. Food poverty is a scourge on our society, but with the cost of living crisis deepening, I worry that many more families will need to access these services.
Today I’ve joined with Team Denton South ([link removed]) Councillors (minus Councillor Jack Naylor ([link removed]) who has COVID) and Lucy from FareShare Greater Manchester ([link removed]) at Tesco Express
([link removed]) to help promote their collection point.
I went and did a shop donation, please help if you can too. Every little is appreciated. Thanks to Manager, Vicki, for inviting us into the store. 🥫 🍞 🥕

** Welcoming St Anne's to Parliament 🏫
------------------------------------------------------------
Earlier this week I was joined in Parliament by St Anne's Primary School, Denton ([link removed]) .
I chatted to them about my role as an MP, and also spoke a bit about the incredible history in and around Westminster.
It's always fantastic to see young people learning about how our democracy works, I'm sure there are a few budding MPs in their ranks! 🌟
** Fighting for Russell Scott Primary School 🗣️
------------------------------------------------------------
I had a very productive meeting on Tuesday morning with Minister for the School System, Baroness Barran.
I asked to meet with her and her team to discuss Russell Scott Primary School ([link removed]) , as I continue to press the Government to take action to help the school after a botched Carillion refurbishment left the site riddled with structural problems.
I've liaised with Tameside Council to supply the Government with additional site surveys as soon as possible so we can give the children of Russell Scott Primary the school that they deserve.
I'll keep fighting for this school until the Government does the right thing.🏫 🌟

📺 WATCH: The Shadow Minister has just set out plans for new Community and Victim Boards to kickstart Community Payback again. Any new community sentences must be served to the priorities set out by local communities and the victims of crime in those communities rather than just litter picking here and there!
