“Let us listen together to what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Let us safeguard our communion. The Paschal Mystery has been given to us. Let us allow ourselves to be embraced by the desire that the Lord continues to have to eat His Passover with us.”  - Pope Francis

SCA 10 Officially Moves to November Ballot

This week, the State Assembly passed SCA 10 – the extreme constitutional amendment to enshrine abortion rights in California.

The amendment will now be listed as an initiative on the statewide ballot in November and California voters will determine if it ultimately becomes law. As written, the language includes all forms of abortion-on-demand, including late-term abortion, which polls show most people oppose. Even Assembly Speaker Rendon, when asked, failed to address whether the measure permits late-term abortions.

Read the Bishops’ statement on the proposed amendment here.

It will be imperative that every individual is engaged to defeat this measure. Stay tuned with the California Catholic Conference on ways to get involved to help defeat this measure on the ballot.

ICYMI: CA Bishops Respond to Dobbs v. Jackson Supreme Court Ruling

Published June 24, 2022 - Today is a day to give thanks and celebrate. The California Catholic Conference of Bishops profoundly welcomes the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobb’s v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which has affirmed our dearly held belief that life is precious, valuable, and should be protected and that states have a compelling interest to protect the unborn and limit abortion. This has been our prayer, the Church’s prayer, for the last 50 years.

While we celebrate this decision - the culmination of prayer and decades of legislative advocacy, life-affirming events, committing time and resources to pregnancy centers, and walking with families facing an unplanned pregnancy – in many ways, our work has just begun.

The Dobbs ruling is a brightly shining ray of light and hope in the war on the sanctity of life, but the battle and the work are far from over.  Extreme abortion-expanding legislation is working its way through the Capitol, and the governor has promised to enshrine abortion into the state constitution. The state is compounding its efforts to make abortion affordable, accessible, and convenient without any talk of equitable services for women who look forward to their child’s birth or for those who are already mothers. Such a stance will make ending a life easy but keeping one more difficult.

CA Legislature Frantically Working on Budget Bills Before Summer Recess

While the California legislature formally passed a record-breaking $300 billion-plus budget this week in time for the July 1 fiscal deadline, there is a flurry of activity around numerous budget “trailer bills” that remain and could alter the funding allocations in that approved bill package.

Lawmakers and staff are in a rush to get the details of trailer bills worked out, which could delay funding as lawmakers prepare to head out for summer recess on July 1.

The California Catholic Conference is studying the trailer bills, and the one, in particular, that is notable at this point that has passed is AB 213, which will make SCA 10 – the constitutional amendment enshrining abortion rights – first on the ballot, and will be named Prop. 1. All other propositions will be numbered thereafter.

Stay tuned with the CCC for more on the budget maneuvering taking place in budget trailer bills and the latest on the state budget.

U.S. Bishop Chairmen Express Concern with U.S. Department of Education’s Proposed Revisions to the Title IX Regulations

“The 701-page proposed rule issued last week contains many provisions of concern to the Church and her ministries, to the faithful and the common good. The full meaning and impact of these provisions is not entirely clear and will require more careful study.

Catholic Leaders Welcome Supreme Court Ruling in Biden v. Texas

“Today’s decision recognizes and preserves the executive branch’s ability to reverse untenable, illegal, and immoral policies, regardless of who is in office. The implementation of MPP has obstructed due process and subjected people to the very dangers that forced them to seek refuge in the United States in the first place. With this ruling, we welcome the end of MPP.”

Opinion: I couldn’t afford an abortion, so I turned to adoption. It was a blessing in disguise.

“I wanted my daughters to know that life holds immeasurable value, despite how I feel. I wanted to show them that I could put my pride aside, endure temporary discomfort and do what was good and beautiful. I wanted to set a good example for them with my faith, integrity, and wisdom.”

Opinion: Having an abortion has made me believe strongly in adoption. Here’s my story.

“I have chosen death and I have chosen life. I can tell you, choosing life is the only option that will bring you life.”
