[1]Pramila Jayapal

John,

This week, I introduced the Trans Bill of Rights in the House of
Representatives. It’s a landmark legal framework to protect the rights of
transgender and nonbinary people and ensure they aren’t discriminated
against or persecuted for their gender identity and expression.

It meant a great deal to me to introduce this framework, as the parent of
a trans kid and as co-chair of the Transgender Equality Task Force. This
is an urgently needed set of protections, as Republicans and an extremist
Supreme Court attack and roll back the fundamental rights of trans people
across our country. Right-wing media and GOP-led state legislatures
continue to target our trans community with hateful, bigoted, and
transphobic attacks.

My Democratic colleagues and I know that trans people, and trans people of
color in particular, face some of the greatest barriers in access to
opportunity, services and resources, and face some of the worst
discrimination. And we know that the GOP will only continue to ramp up
attacks on the trans community. We know we need to pass federal
protections for trans and nonbinary folks urgently.

The Trans Bill of Rights would call on the federal government to:

* Ensure that transgender and nonbinary people have equal access to
services and public accommodations by making the Civil Rights Act of
1964 and federal education laws inclusive.
* Recognize the right to bodily autonomy and ethical healthcare by
expanding access to gender-affirming medical care and other healthcare
services for trans and nonbinary people.
* Promote the safety of trans and nonbinary people by investing in
community services to prevent violence against trans and nonbinary
people and expand services for survivors.
* And much more.

The Trans Bill of Rights says clearly to the trans community that we see
you and we will stand with you to ensure you are protected and given the
dignity and respect that every person should have.

Thank you for showing your support for such an important and sweeping
framework for the trans community.

In solidarity,

Pramila
