Governor DeSantis Signs Bill to Expand Bright Futures Scholarships







Governor DeSantis signed House Bill 461 to expand eligibility for the Bright Futures Scholarship Program to include paid work experience as a substitute for service hours.



This expansion allows students who work after school jobs to apply their paid work contributions to their communities to substitute service hour requirements. The legislation allows students the opportunity to receive Bright Futures Scholarships who might not otherwise have been able to meet the requirements for a scholarship.



“Florida students should not lose the opportunity to receive a Bright Futures Scholarship because they have to work to help their families make ends meet,” Governor DeSantis said. “After school jobs teach our students valuable life lessons, much like community service hours do.”

Governor DeSantis Signs Record-Breaking Alzheimer’s Funding







Governor DeSantis highlighted record funding for Alzheimer’s and related dementias in signing the Ramping Up Education of Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia for You (READY) Act.



Additionally, the Governor announced that the final pillar of the five-part Dementia Action Plan, created in 2019, has been fulfilled with the establishment of the Florida Alzheimer’s Center for Excellence. The Freedom First Budget signed this month by the Governor included record funding for Alzheimer’s and dementia care, marking a nearly 60% increase in funding since the Governor took office in 2019.



“Supporting Floridians suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia is an important part of supporting our seniors,” Governor DeSantis said.



The Freedom First budget also includes



- $52.3 million for the Alzheimer’s Disease Initiative Program, an increase of $12 million over the previous year.





- $91.7 million for the Community Care for the Elderly Program, an increase of $9 million over the previous year.

Governor DeSantis Signs Miya’s Law to Strengthen Renter Safety







On Monday, Governor DeSantis signed Senate Bill 898, known as “Miya’s Law,” to strengthen residential tenant safety measures.



The legislation includes:



- Requiring background checks for prospective employees;





- Maintaining a log for each dwelling unit’s keys; and





- Increasing notification requirements for maintenance and repairs from 12 to 24 hours.



The bill is named after Miya Marcano, a young Orlando student who was tragically killed in her apartment in 2021 by a maintenance worker who entered her unit with an apartment key fob.



“Every tenant deserves to be safe in their own home,” Governor DeSantis said. “By signing this legislation, we are making it safer to live in a rental unit and giving renters more peace of mind in their homes.”

$15.6 Million for Cybersecirty and IT Training in Florida



On Wednesday, Governor DeSantis announced $15.6 million to expand cybersecurity and IT training in Florida. The funding is part of Governor DeSantis’ goal to make Florida the best state in the nation for workforce education by 2030. The 24 projects that will be funded are expected to train 27,000 Florida students over the next year.



“We will continue to invest in ensuring Florida’s high schools and colleges offer programs that allow students to immediately enter the workforce with the ability to secure high-paying jobs,” Governor DeSantis said.

Judge Rejects Attempt to Block the Stop WOKE Act



A federal judge this week rejected arguments by attorneys for teachers, a diversity consultant and others asking him to block Florida’s Stop WOKE Act that is aimed at keeping woke education out of Florida classrooms and workplaces. The law goes into effect July 1, 2022.



Chief U.S. District Judge Mark Walker, who has regularly ruled against Florida Republican laws, most notably on the 2021 election integrity law, denied the request for a preliminary injunction against the law. He ruled that the plaintiffs lacked standing because they did not show how they would be harmed by the law.

Senator Rubio’s Plan for Post-Roe America







Senator Marco Rubio wrote a guest column in the Washington Examiner outlining his proposal for creating an environment celebrating and supporting life in America after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade:



On Friday, the Supreme Court released its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, ending Roe v. Wade. This end is long overdue. Abortion violates the most fundamental human right — the right to life — and requiring its legalization was never constitutional.



But even now that America's pro-abortion legal regime has been overturned, our work is far from over. We can and must do more for unborn children and their mothers. What we need is a pro-life plan for post-Roe America. Fortunately, there are some concrete steps policymakers can take — steps that would make a world of difference to parents and children in need.



The first is to expand further the federal child tax credit for working families. When Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) and I expanded the credit in 2017, millions of people across almost every income bracket reaped the benefits. There is no reason why we shouldn't do the same again. Working parents do more for America's future than almost any other group — they deserve to keep more of their hard-earned income.

AG Moody on Fox outlines Florida’s response to illegal immigration

Attorney General Ashley Moody was on Fox Business News this week explaining Florida’s response to the criminal cartels smuggling a record number of illegal, unvetted migrants across the border. Governor DeSantis signed a new retail theft law to break up organized retail theft rings and allow local law enforcement to prosecute criminals, unlike pro-criminal places like Chicago where “fake prosecutors” are letting violent offenders back on the streets.

Patronis Speaks at One-Year Anniversary of Surfside Collapse







Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis released the following statement on the one-year anniversary of the Surfside condo collapse.



“The Surfside building collapse will live with every one of us forever. While we honor and mourn today for the 98 souls that are no longer with us, we also pray for the parents, brothers, sisters, and children that were left behind – and how they’re fighting to get back to some type of normal. On this day one year ago, I saw the work of God when 400 of Florida’s Urban Search & Rescue Team members fought, and kept fighting, for any hope of life. They battled fire, they battled rain, they battled the heat. Their boots and gloves were destroyed. They had to keep respirators on to avoid the cancer-causing substances that so many firefighters got after 9/11. In fact, some of these men and women served at ground zero.



“On that mound of rubble, I saw hell on Earth. But I also saw God’s presence in the men and women that fought with every ounce of their being to save lives. As we pray for grace and peace, may we never forget, and forever honor these 98 souls.”







Lieutenant Governor Nuñez: We’ve Kept Our Promises







Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nuñez participated in the Bright Futures signing, noting that she and Governor DeSantis vowed to invest in, and prioritize, Florida’s education system and to continue opening doors to success for students of all backgrounds.



This funding is continuing to fulfill that promise. “I’m proud that Florida continues to be a leader in education reform and a state that supports its students,” she said.
