NC News

• The Leandro case will be heard by the NC Supreme Court during the week of August 29.
• The NC State legislature released the new budget for $27.9 billion dollars.
  • It will not expand medicaid
  • It does not reduce taxes
  • It will give teachers and state workers a raise of an average of 4.2%
  • It will give $15 million to the ACC if they keep their headquarters in NC. 
  • $56 million will go to "opportunity scholarships" to pay for low-income public school students to pay for private school tuition
  • Transfer of $1 billion into a new "State Inflationary Reserve" in anticipation of a recession due to the inflation crisis
  • $4.8 billion will be invested into the semiconductor company Wolfspeed (formerly Cree) which hopes to bring 1800 jobs to Chatham County
• The State House passed their own Medicaid expansion bill, but it has delays of expansion for months and does not match up with the Senate's expansion bill. But Phil Berger, Phil Moore and Roy Cooper are finally in agreement to expand Medicaid in NC. 
• Transgender people in NC can finally change their gender markers on their birth certificates!

Say NO to Signature Verification

The NC Republican Party is demanding that the NC State Board of Elections violate its standards and toss out legitimate mail-in ballots in the upcoming midterm election. The county board of elections officials already verify signatures by requiring two witnesses on mail-in ballots. The Republican party wants signature matching in NC- it is unreliable and another form of voter suppression that makes big impacts on vulnerable communities. Please make your voice heard and make public comments until Tuesday, July 5 through the NC State Board of Elections.

July 26, 2022 Election

The May primary resulted in some run off elections and some municipalities have a general election on July 26. This will not be a high turn out election unless we organize and get people to the polls! See the final municipalities and counties that have elections below:

General Municipal Elections: Charlotte, Fayetteville, Greensboro, Hickory, Mooresville and Sanford

Municipal Run Off Elections: Cary, New Bern, Rocky Mount, Statesville

Board of Education Run Off Elections: Franklin County, Jackson County District 2

Sheriff Second Primary (This happens when no candidate exceeds the 30% threshold):

Graham County Sheriff (Republican), Wake County Sheriff (Democratic)

Important Dates to Know:

• Mail In Ballot Portal Open Now!
• June 26 - Mail-In Ballots will start to be mailed out 
• July 1 - Voter Registration Deadline to vote on July 26
• July 7 - Early Voting/Same Day Registration Starts (Check your county board of elections website for locations and hours)
• July 19 - Deadline to request a mail-in ballot
• July 23 - Early Voting/Same Day Registration Ends
• July 26 - Election Day and all mail-in ballots must be postmarked by July 26

We're excited to take part in a week of peace in Greensboro for July 11 - 16 to honor the late civil rights icon Carolyn Coleman. 

Carolyn Coleman passed away earlier this year and was a big part of the NAACP over the last 30 years.

Durham Tech Food Pantry Donation Drive

Please join us and our friends at Carolina Jews for Justice on Sunday, July 24 to benefit Durham Tech Community College's Campus Harvest Food Pantry. They are looking for diapers of any size, menstrual products and "grab and go" nonperishable breakfast items to stock in their food pantry!

We'll be at the Durham Co-Op at 1111 W. Chapel Hill St in Durham from 11am-12:30pm. Please drop off and donate any items you can!

SCOTUS News

The Supreme Court of the United States ended their term this week and dropped more catastrophic rulings. Here's a quick look at what happened this week:

1. Biden v. Texas - SCOTUS allows the Biden administration to end the Trump executive order asylum policy known as "remain in Mexico". However the ruling also gives lower courts the ability to decide on border policy. 
2. EPA v. West Virginia- SCOTUS rules that the EPA does not have the authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions that have been causing climate change. 
3. Oklahoma v. Castro-Huerta - SCOTUS rules that states can prosecute crimes against Native American victims committed on reservations if the defendant is not Native American. 
4. Kennedy v. Bremerton School District - SCOTUS continues to narrow the separation of church and state ruling that the school district violated the constitutional right to free speech and freedom to exercise religion of a football coach at a public high school. 
5. The court agreed to take on a case in the next term from North Carolina- Moore v. Harper. The case, according to the Southern Coalition for Social Justice, will advance the legal theory that would allow state legislatures to restrict the freedom to vote and fair elections with impunity. In layman's terms, there would be no check on state legislatures when they gerrymander maps or decide the rules of elections. 
6. Justice Breyer officially retired yesterday, June 30 at 12PM. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson was sworn in yesterday, to be the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States.
