The consequences of GOP Extremism
There are real consequences to the Republicans’ extremism.
Imagine getting the call from your doctor.
“ I'm calling to let you know that the tests have come back. You have cancer.”
If you’ve gotten that call before, you know what it feels like to hear those chilling words.
But then she says – “There’s good news. We have had excellent results with early chemotherapy treatment. But time is of the essence here and we need to get started.”
Of course, you say. When should you come in? You can clear your schedule.
Your mind turns to your family, your friends, your future.
“That’s complicated. Unfortunately, chemotherapy will kill your fetus. Before we start the chemo, you will need an abortion. And –”
Your doctor pauses to take in a deep breath.
“Right now in Ohio we cannot provide that treatment for you. The closest abortion provider for you is in Indiana.”
She explains that you should call immediately, because Indiana requires an 18 hour waiting period after mandatory counseling, and the Indiana legislature may further restrict abortion access in a special session on July 6.
There are two business days between now and July 6.
This is, and isn’t, a hypothetical situation.
This week, a cancer patient in Dayton needed an abortio ( [link removed] ) n ( [link removed] ) before she could undergo chemotherapy. But because Republicans banned abortion – even in her situation – she was told that she has to go to Indiana.
Imagine the panic of being in that situation. Imagine watching your best friend, your mom, your daughter, your sister – learn that they have cancer … and that they can’t get treatment for days or weeks because a radical state legislature claims to be “pro life.”
Health care is complicated. Decisions about health care are complicated.
That is why those decisions should not be made for you by a Republican-dominated state legislature that caters to a radical, extreme base.
Only one party – the Democratic party – is committed to protecting your right to make your own healthcare decisions.
And Democrats are committed to fighting for that right – in every corner of Ohio.
You can help them, just by joining us at Blue Ohio.
Because until we start challenging GOP extremism on abortion and so many other issues in every corner of Ohio—which means supporting Democratic candidates in every corner of Ohio—their extremism will continue to explode.
Blue Ohio is a group of grassroots folks who crowdsource support for state legislative nominees by chipping in a few bucks a month. Those funds are distributed after the primary to the Democratic nominees for Ohio state legislature – making sure that every nominee has resources to fight for you. We leave no nominee behind, and no voter behind.
