We can’t let Google trade abortion seekers’ safety for profit. Sign the letter demanding the company stop data-fueling abortion criminalization.
John,
Following the Supreme Court’s decision on Roe, our work to hold tech companies accountable for their complicity in human rights abuses has reached an even greater level of urgency
That’s why we’re mobilizing on every possible level right now, and we’re especially doubling down on calls to Google to immediately end the unnecessary collection and retention of location data that can be used to track and prosecute abortion seekers. Help amplify the message to Google by adding your name to a letter from 40+ organizations here. This shift around data collection represents one of the most important and impactful measures Big Tech can take to protect people getting abortions in this moment, and we cannot let up the pressure.
The Washington Post reports that an Alphabet Workers Union statement demanding “Google refuse to store any data that could be used to prosecute users in the US exercising their bodily autonomy” has received over 1000 signatures from Google employees so far, while other groups of employees have been taking to internal company forums to express their frustrations and anger directly at management.1 Their organizing follows another powerful letter from lawmakers – this one sent to the FTC – requesting an investigation into Google and Apple’s dangerous data sharing policies.2 The momentum behind the push to hold Google accountable is undeniable – and it’s building every day. Make your voice heard by adding your name to the open letter to Google now.
Why is this so dangerous?
Not only is the retention of millions of users’ location data incredibly invasive, it also plays right into the hands of abusive prosecutors. Through “geofence” data requests, the identities of anyone who traveled to a specific place at a specific time—like an abortion clinic on a specific day–can be unmasked.3 The only way to protect Americans’ location data from such outrageous government surveillance is for Google not to keep it in the first place. Tell Google: stop fueling abortion criminalization and take a stand for human rights.
Together,
Leila and the team at Fight
P.S. We’re collaborating with partner organizations on a petition delivery event at Google’s offices in DC – stay tuned for details, and make sure your signature is included!
