Our most significant achievement is that beginning in the 2022-23 school year, sex education must include information on contraception and STI prevention at the 7th and 8th-grade levels. This will impact 834,000 students each year, and that 100% of Texas school districts will be required to teach an abstinence-plus sex ed curriculum, increasing the number of districts offering this content by nearly 600%.
To support schools, parents, and communities, Texas is Ready has:
- Developed a suite of resources on www.texasisready.org to provide all of the information school districts or charter schools need to meet the new curriculum standards effectively.
- Delivered 27 webinars to 690 local advocates and created resources for parents and caregivers to understand the laws, sex ed requirements, and how to get involved in the process.
- United 21 school districts (and growing!) in a community of practice to support implementation.
We have a lot of work to do to make sure school districts are prepared to implement not only the new minimum standards but aim to implement high-quality sexual health education Texas students need and deserve.
