I’m Cecile Richards, the former president of Planned Parenthood and a co-chair at American Bridge. For years, I’ve fought back as Republicans have worked to erode the right to choose. Sadly, they’ve finally succeeded with a horrifying decision by the Supreme Court overturning a fundamental right that Americans have held for the nearly 50 years since Roe v. Wade.

Abortions will continue happening – with a great physical, mental, and emotional toll on abortion seekers from red states. That is what’s at stake in November in state legislatures across the country: The right to have a safe, accessible abortion.

As of today, abortion is banned in seven Republican-held states. So right now, one of our best courses of action is working to build Democratic majorities in state legislatures across the country to codify abortion rights into law.

The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee is the only official party committee dedicated to electing Democrats to state legislatures. In all 17 states where Democrats hold the majority, abortion rights were protected or expanded.

In my home state of Texas, an abortion ban has been in place since last September, making any abortion after six weeks of pregnancy illegal. That’s before many people even know they are pregnant.

I refuse to live in a country where my children and others in the next generation have fewer rights than we did. Access to safe abortion is an essential part of our society, and one we simply cannot compromise on or do without.
