Dear John

Rivers of Living Water - Arba Minch, Ethiopia

AE knows that working with the local church to strengthen and equip it is one of the most effective strategies for making and creating disciples over the long term.

Our upcoming mission in Arba Minch (which literally means 40 springs), Ethiopia, aims to reach 40 000 people between the 24th and 29th of December. AE has been working with the local church to strengthen and equip it during the preparation phase of this mission, and we are excited about the ripe harvest that awaits us during this proclamation phase. Join us in praying that as the Lord "send(s) out labourers into the harvest field", that souls would be won for Christ in this significant city.

The picture above shows the AE Ethiopia Team Leader, Mel Mesfin with 30 leaders, evangelists, women, youth, and university students selected from different church denominations in the city and trained in evangelism.

As one looks upon the Arba Minch region, it is clear that the land is desperately thirsty for "living water" (John 7:37-39). Poverty in the region has led to alarming rates of homelessness, substance abuse, prostitution and violence. According to Mel, spiritual lukewarmness of believers has resulted in a church culture that is largely undifferentiated from that of the world, and prosperity gospel teaching has made many Christians 'cold'. A lack of unity within the church has also crippled its influence in the city.

Muslims in Ethiopia

While historically Ethiopia has been a model of Christians and Muslims mostly living harmoniously, this has been deteriorating of late. The atmosphere in Ethiopia for Christians is quite unsettled at present as many churches have been burned this year and two Christian pastors were beheaded in late October.

AE missions are on the front line.

Last year AE Ethiopia’s mission led to an Islamic teacher coming to faith:

Adem Mohammed is from a Muslim background. He was trained as a teacher in Islamic religion and was sent out to different places in the country and the neighboring African countries for the cause. In 2018 he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior.

He says "I started reading the Quran when I was 7 years. Since then I was zealous for the Islamic faith, yet I was without peace of mind. I was a restless person and needed a way out. I searched for the Truth.

Some months ago two evangelists approached me and told me about Jesus. As I heard them speak I knew that was what I was looking for and so, I accepted Jesus. For the last 11 months I am joyful because I know whom I have believed. Now I know the Truth. Immediately after I believed in Jesus my relatives became very furious and wanted to kill me. But God has protected me. My plan is to learn the Bible deeper and become an evangelist, even going out to neighbouring African countries as a Christian missionary."

Please Pray:

*
For believers in Arba Minch to be ignited with a passion for the lost.
*
For many to quench their thirst with the 'living water' Jesus.
*
For the generosity of our supporters to be multiplied many times over in new committments to Jesus.
*
For unity amongst churches
*
For wisdom for Mel and his team in leading the proclamation phase of the mission.

*
For Adem to continue to grow in his faith.

For Adem to continue to grow in his faith.

*
God’s divine intervention in the streets is powerful and awesome, with people responding on the spot. Who can stand in the way of God’s purpose to bring people into His eternal kingdom. Praise God! May many more Muslims to respond to the Lordship of Jesus

For the families of those pastors killed – for spiritual comfort and material provision.

Thank you for your faithful prayers.
