Supporter –
Today's Supreme Court ruling hinders the Environmental Protection Agency's ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from coal and gas power plants under the Clean Air Act. It is the most significant climate case in a decade–and it comes at a dire moment.
Just a few months ago, the world's leading climate scientists warned that it's “now or never” and that without dramatic action, our planet is on “track toward an unlivable planet.”1
Dismaying as it is, the Supreme Court's ruling will not stop us. With strong grassroots campaigns across the country, the Sierra Club is uniquely positioned to keep up the struggle for climate justice. We are working tirelessly to protect the human and natural environment for each and every one of us. Together, we have retired 357 coal plants, defeated the Atlantic Coast and Keystone XL pipelines, and passed dozens of clean energy, climate, and environmental bills at every level of the government. And with the right pressure, we can get Congress to pass necessary investments in climate, jobs, and justice.
But our ability to prevail in the coming weeks and months ahead will depend on the sustained support we receive from supporters like yourself.
If you care about our planet's future, we need you now: Donate monthly and support Sierra Club's work to cut carbon pollution, advance clean energy, and transition our world away from destructive fossil fuels. Even a modest monthly gift of just $5 can make an enormous impact.
You and I see our climate changing before our eyes. Record-setting temperatures. Unnatural floods and storms. Massive wildfires at a scale never-before-seen. And we are already seeing that Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities bear a disproportionate burden of the suffering and destruction from pervasive, systemic racism.
Yet in the face of these undeniable changes, polluters seek only to maximize their profits, no matter the expense to the public health or our planet. Today's ruling gives coal executives and far-right politicians exactly what they asked for by frustrating EPA's efforts to set strong, effective carbon pollution standards from power plants that would help protect our communities and families. It is a warning that coal companies and their allies will not back down in their fight to strip EPA's authority and give the judiciary a new and dangerous veto over the will of the people and the elected branches.2
As the fossil fuel industry schemes on how it can build on today's ruling, we must redouble our efforts to stop them and fight for a sustainable future.
Will you make a monthly gift to strengthen our climate-critical work?
Give monthly and join a movement of concerned individuals who are making a real difference to stop polluters and a climate catastrophe. Will you consider making a monthly gift of $5 today?
Supporter, even before this dismaying Supreme Court decision, it was past time to act. But while our planet's trajectory is alarming, every positive action we take now to curb climate change will save lives.
I hope you'll decide to take positive action today by becoming a monthly donor to the Sierra Club. Remember that even a modest gift of $5 per month will make a real difference.
With deep appreciation,
Dan Chu
Acting Executive Director
