Fishing regulations available in Hmong, Karen, Somali, Spanish

The DNR translated the 2022 fishing regulations into Hmong, Karen, Somali, and Spanish — the four most commonly spoken languages, apart from English, in Minnesota. The translated booklets are in digital format on the DNR website and in print at locations where they are likely to be in demand, including at select DNR offices, at license vendors and at some Minnesota state parks.

To request a free copy of the English, Hmong, Karen, Somali or Spanish regulation booklets be mailed to you, call the DNR’s Information Center at 651-296-6157 or 888-646-6367 or by emailing [email protected].

Be safe while boating

The July 4th holiday weekend is one of historically busy boat traffic on Minnesota’s waters. Practice safety in all that you do and watch out for others who may not be watching for you.

Everyone on the boat should wear their life jacket. Wearing a life jacket is the best way to ensure an unexpected fall into the water doesn’t turn tragic.

Boating under the influence applies to drugs, as well as alcohol. Alcohol can impair a boater's judgment, balance, vision and reaction time. Common boating stressors — sun, wind, noise, vibration and motion — intensify the effects of alcohol, drugs and some medications.

Distracted boating is a rising safety issue. Just as distracted driving is a concern on our roads, distracted boating can lead to accidents and fatalities on our waters.

Mille Lacs Lake has a July 1-15 walleye closure

Mille Lacs Lake anglers can catch and release walleye through Thursday, June 30, and are reminded of a two-week walleye closure — implemented to reduce hooking mortality — that will be in place from Friday, July 1, through Friday, July 15. During the walleye closure, angling is allowed for all other species.

releasing a northern pike
Reminder: Minnesota has northern pike zone regulations

If you might want to keep northern pike, please familiarize yourself with the regulations and be prepared to measure the fish. Minnesota has three northern pike zones that apply to inland waters and reflect the differing characteristics of pike populations across the state:

* North-central: Limit of 10 northern pike; anglers must release all fish 22 to 26 inches, with only two fish longer than 26 inches allowed in possession.
* Northeast: Limit of two northern pike; anglers must release all fish 30 to 40 inches, with only one fish over 40 inches allowed in possession.
* South: Limit of two northern pike; minimum size 24 inches.

Throughout the state, special regulations that cover individual lakes, rivers and streams remain in effect and take precedence over the zone regulations. The northern pike zone regulations do not apply to border waters.

dock with hydraulic jet and the water is all murky, with some plants piled on the dock
Hydraulic jets: Know the rules

Please know the rules on hydraulic jets — and help protect lake habitat. Each year, the DNR receives questions about devices that generate a water current to blast away muck and plants. They have various trade names, but the DNR refers to these devices generically as hydraulic jets. Even though you can buy one in Minnesota, they cannot be used in any way that disturbs the bottom of the lake or uproots plants.

Aquatic plants are important to lakes. They help maintain water clarity, prevent erosion, stabilize the bottom and provide habitat for fish and wildlife and are therefore protected under state law.

dead fish, multiple species, in shallow water, biggest is a pike or muskie
Please report fish die-offs

Help us track fish die-offs by reporting any time you see several dead fish in a lake or stream. In mid-spring and summer, fish die-offs are often the result of warming water and opportunistic infections that spread in fish populations that are already stressed after the spawning season. Reports help Minnesota DNR determine whether an investigation is needed if the die-off doesn’t match up with natural causes. Call the state duty officer at 651‐649‐5451 or 800‐422‐0798, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We appreciate your help monitoring fish health in Minnesota!
