SCOTUS “Remain in Mexico” Decision A Win, Now Administration Must Act to Save Lives and Restore Asylum System

The U.S. Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision in Biden v. Texas affirms that the Biden Administration can end the ill-advised Trump-era “Remain in Mexico” program. This decision, which doesn't automatically end the failed program, paves the way for the Biden Administration to uphold the right of asylum seekers to seek safe haven at our border—and in doing so, allows the United States to once again welcome people with dignity and due process rather than cruelty and confinement.

CLASP Reacts to Reproductive Rights Decision, Enactment of Gun Bill

 

Two significant developments last week have major implications for people with low incomes and communities of color. Within an hour of Friday’s Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade, CLASP issued a statement detailing the connection between access to reproductive services and economic security and opportunity. Similarly, we posted a statement immediately after President Biden signed the Safer Communities Act that praised some aspects of the bill that advance mental health but also called for greater attention to the needs of young people—especially those from Black and brown communities.

On July 2, join A New Deal for Youth Changemakers for a half-day in-person event in Atlanta, GA. The session will bring light to issues that heavily impact young people (such as the current mental health crisis, youth unemployment rates, civic engagement, and the climate crisis) and share tools to hold elected officials accountable to the New Deal for Youth’s Demands.

On June 28, Indi Dutta-Gupta spoke at “Policies to Protect Workers and Families: Lessons for Strengthening Social Insurance.” The webcast, hosted by The Hamilton Project at the Brookings Institution, explored lessons for strengthening social insurance programs. On June 23, Wendy Cervantes and Juan Gomez spoke at the third annual National Immigration Summit. The event, co-sponsored by CLASP, discussed child-forward immigration policies, access to basic needs and mental health resources, education, and how to shift the narrative surrounding immigrants and immigration.

 

On June 22, Parker Gilkesson of the income and work supports team and Maryann Broxton of the Community Partnership Group, presented on Strategies to Engage State and Local Partners, Stakeholders and Elected Officials. The event was part of the Food Research and Action Center’s 2023 Farm Bill Webinar Series.
