John –

Our country is headed down a very disturbing path.

Extreme conservatives steadily chipped away at civil rights for decades, and their work was only accelerated with the Trump presidency. Now, with a conservative majority on the Supreme Court, they are getting exactly what they have been working towards.

We’ve seen this alarming, sinister mission come to fruition in the Court’s latest rulings:
Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health: The Court destroyed the abortion rights established by Roe and Casey, directly endangering millions of people in America and dismantling the constitutional right to privacy.

Carson v. Makin: SCOTUS held that Maine is constitutionally required to allow federal tuition assistance funds to go to private religious schools – transparent dismantling of the separation of church and state.

New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen: During a moment of national reckoning on gun violence, New York’s concealed-carry law keeping guns out of dangerous hands was struck down, yet another overreach from the conservative Court that undermines our fight to end gun violence.

Kennedy v. Bremerton School District: SCOTUS ruled that a public school official can pressure students into prayer – delivering a second wrecking ball to the separation of church and state, and a direct violation of freedom of religion.

West Virginia v. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA): The Court hijacked and rewrote the Clean Air Act for corporate polluters by shielding the fossil fuel industry from direct federal regulation of planet-killing carbon pollution. This is one of the most consequential environmental cases of our lifetime, and instead of protecting the health of American families, the Court sided with the GOP and its profit-seeking polluter allies.

Moore v. Harper: SCOTUS also announced it will hear a case next term that threatens to undermine election laws across the country, in which GOP lawmakers argue that state legislatures have the power to set election rules completely independent of state constitutions or state courts.
As one of the core pillars of our government, the Supreme Court is supposed to uphold and protect the Constitution. It is supposed to secure the promise of equal justice under the law.

But as of late, this radical Court has done the opposite.

Right-wing extremists worked toward these rulings for decades. They sowed the seeds now sprouting an upheaval of the civil rights and fundamental principles of democracy we have fought so hard to protect.

We can see the path laid out by extremists ahead, and this pivotal moment is our opportunity to change our nation’s course. The work ahead isn’t going to be easy, or even quick, but it is of the utmost importance.

For the safety and well-being of our communities, especially the most vulnerable, we cannot afford to let the despair of these recent decisions from SCOTUS lead us to complacency.

We must channel this disappointment and anger into action. Together we can continue standing in defense of equal justice and freedom for all.

The fight starts here.

Thanks for all you do,

Team Huffman
