John–
The past week has felt like whiplash.
Our movement made history by passing the first major federal gun safety law in 26 years, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. It will save lives and help prevent gun violence in communities across the country.
But in the same week, the Supreme Court ruled against gun safety in NYSRPA v. Bruen to allow guns in more places in some states—and against our reproductive rights by overturning Roe v. Wade. Both decisions will lead to more deaths.
Holding these complicated realities all at once isn't easy. It's why I want to check in with you: Tell us what brought you to the gun safety movement. Take this survey so we can incorporate your thoughts as we plan for the work ahead.
I've been part of the gun safety movement for seven years, and this month was one of the most intense times I've experienced. Our state-level fights added to it: Earlier this month, Ohio lawmakers passed an outrageous law to arm teachers. Yet just a week later we claimed victory in Rhode Island, passing laws to prohibit high capacity magazines, stop the open carry of guns, and raise the age to purchase guns to 21.
We're in the middle of an incredibly difficult time for our country—yet we've already shown what can happen when we refuse to sit on the sidelines.
Over the course of just a few weeks, people from across the country organized and mobilized to demand action from their U.S. senators on gun safety. We showed up in numbers I'd never seen before—and together, we won. Because of people like you, our country now has a new historic gun law that will save lives.
There have been setbacks—big ones—but many of us who've been fighting for a long time will say the same thing: I've never felt more hopeful about ending gun violence.
We have more work ahead of us, but I know that together, we can build a future that's safer for everyone.
Onward,
