DEC Statement on the Overturning of
Roe v. Wade

Consider a Monthly Donation

Are you frustrated and tired of the attacks on our democracy? How about the recent state legislative actions that are reversing progress on voting and women’s rights? We will not stand by idly as our state and democracy is dismantled. Defending the rights of Indian River County and Floridian citizens through voter outreach, voter education, and candidates is our mission. But we need you! For the price of coffee and a scone at Starbucks, your monthly donation can help keep our office open and staffed to accomplish our goals. Please consider signing up to be a monthly donor to allow us to continue the vital work necessary. You can donate here or on our website:

School Board Candidate - Cindy Gibbs

The most important thing to do right now is to knock on doors for Cindy. We knock on our neighbors’ doors, say a few words about the upcoming election and Cindy’s qualifications for the position of School Board Member, and then leave a card or a door hanger with them.

Sign up here to canvass every Tuesday evening in Vero Beach with Cindy here:

and share it with your friends, family and neighbors. Checks can be written to Cynthia Gibbs Campaign Account for up to $1,000.

Last, Cindy is marching in the Sebastian 4^th of July Parade and will have a booth at the Freedom Fest at Riverview Park immediately following.
She will need help setting up the booth by 7:30 AM at Riverview Park in Sebastian—she will be in a 10x10 tent handing out apples and American flags and campaign literature. The Freedom Fest officially begins after parade—around 10:30 AM and plans to stay until 4 PM.
Would you like to walk or ride with Cindy in the Sebastian 4^th of July parade? Email her at [email protected] (mailto:[email protected])

Democratic Club of Indian River

Young Democrats of the Treasure Coast

Our July monthly membership meeting will be held in Vero Beach on Tuesday, July 12, at 7:00pm, at American Icon Brewery, located at 1133 19th Place (SR 60 Eastbound), Vero Beach, FL 32960.

TRAININGS

Online, two-day candidate and campaign team training - July 9 & 10, 1-5 p.m. both days. Cost/Tickets $35

Kevin Winchell, Trainer

Dates and Times: The workshop will be divided into two sections, and will therefore be held over two days: Saturday July 9 from 1:00-5:00pm, and Sunday July 10 from 1:00-5:00pm. (Ignore the fact that Eventbrite only has it listed as being on Saturday July 9; Eventbrite doesn't allow for two-part events, for some reason.) Different information will be covered on each day, so registrants are expected to attend both days. (If you have to step out for a little while to take care of something, that's okay; we'll send everyone a recording of the training so you don't miss a thing.)

Topics: Topics include campaign messaging, voter psychology, campaign strategy, budgeting and needs identification, fundraising and asset mapping, volunteer recruitment and management, voter outreach and get-out-the-vote operations, traditional and social media prioritization, and campaign data and analytics. We'll share examples and templates that will make it easier to understand and complete the campaign planning process for your own campaign. BONUS: will include best-practices for campaigning during COVID - including tips for gathering petitions, online organizing, conducting voter outreach, and fundraising.

LOCAL

Antisemitic Flyers Left on Driveways in IRC

The “Let’s Go Brandon” antisemitic flyers were left on doorsteps and driveways last week. The FBI is investigating. This is infuriating and unacceptable. We need to do whatever we can to support our local Temple and our Jewish neighbors.

My Mother Provided Sanctuary for Women: Now I Will Take on Her Mantle

55 years ago, my mother, a catholic married woman with 7 children of her own, provided sanctuary to women seeking illegal abortions. Having travelled great distances, women would arrive after dinner. My mother would quietly welcome them and settle them in a spare bedroom. The next morning, they were gone. My mother knew the hardship an unplanned pregnancy would bring upon a woman and her family. She also trusted women to make the best decisions for themselves and their families. She had great compassion for other women, other mothers. I know she did not believe that government should have a role in determining private matters such as family planning.

Several years later Roe v Wade made illegal abortions unnecessary. Three generations have grown up believing they have a right to privacy. Today abortion legality is left to the states as it was 55 years ago. Now elected officials, mostly men, will have governance over women in a shocking way. I believe as my mother did that women should be trusted to make family planning decisions for themselves. There is no place for government to insert itself, to intrude or criminalize some of the most private and impactful decisions women will ever make. We know from history that making abortion illegal will not stop the need. Men will continue to impregnate women, some in an unplanned way and others in a most unsavory way. Now like my mother I will pick up the mantel and aid and abet women who need help at one of the most difficult times in their lives.

Yes, I will vote. I always have. I encourage everyone who is outraged by this Supreme Court ruling to be active, do what you can to support women. Don’t wait for November to do something. And yes please vote.

Democrats Try to Pass Reasonable Gun Laws but Can’t Get Republicans to Agree

I received a political flier the other day (via email) notifying me of a person running for office in Indian River County. Their announcement showed them lying on the ground shooting an AR-15 for fun and “my” protection.

In light of the recent massacres in Uvalde, Buffalo, Maryland committed with this assault weapon, the visual chosen lacked any sensitivity and was, frankly, abhorrent. It’s akin to Lauren Boebert (R-Colorado) sending out Christmas photos of her children holding rifles or Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) standing in front of a poster of “the Squad” while holding an AR-15. Why do they need to lie and threaten people? According to www.politicusa.com, “The Republican Party lies to their base as an intentional strategy to mislead the country.”

Since Sandy Hook, Democratic lawmakers have tried to pass reasonable gun control laws (no, they do not want to take your guns away), but have been unable to get the Republicans to agree. Democrats believe that they can reduce gun violence while respecting the rights of responsible gun owners, by expanding and strengthening background checks, raising the age to purchase a semiautomatic rifle, licensing, classes, wait time, red flag law and more (www.newsweek.com). What was signed doesn’t address assault weapons.

The following is from an editorial in the French newspaper Le Monde: “If there is still an American exceptionalism, it is to tolerate its schools being regularly transformed into shooting ranges, sticky with blood. America is killing itself, and the Republican Party is looking elsewhere.”

Vote as if your life and your children’s lives depend on it.

TIDBITS

It seems like our world is crashing down with something new every day. The January 6^th hearings. Roe v. Wade decision. Religious freedom (which is mostly religion forced on others) decision.

At a meeting this week, I heard the term “vicarious trauma”. It comes from watching distressing things on TV. I hear from many of you how the hearings and Supreme Court decisions are so difficult to work through. It’s hard, I know. So, this week, let’s just remember to take care of ourselves a bit. Turn that TV off, put your phone in a drawer for an hour, and then do something to bring you less stress. Here are some ideas:
