Dear friends,
After a wait of more than a month, an investigation by the UN Human Rights Office finally concluded that the shot that killed US-Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh on 11 May could only have been fired by Israeli security forces. Those responsible for this unforgivable killing can no longer shirk their responsibility.
Ever since this reporter’s death, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) had been calling for an independent international investigation to establish the precise circumstances. With a disregard for the truth, the Israeli military had concluded its own rushed investigation just two days after the tragedy, saying it was “not possible to unequivocally determine the source of the gunfire which hit and killed Ms. Abu Akleh.”
In the light of the UN’s findings, the Israeli authorities now have a duty to carry out and complete a proper investigation in order to render justice to Al Jazeera’s journalist. Enough bad faith! Enough disdain for the truth when journalists are killed! They can no longer decently hide behind their initial hasty investigation when they are clearly responsible.
Help us to defend journalists like Shireen Abu Akleh, who put their lives at risk in order to carry out investigative reporting that is invaluable for freedom of information in regions where there is armed conflict.
