China is currently building over half of the world’s new coal-based power plants.

In 2021, China began building 33 gigawatts of coal-based power generation, according to the Helsinki-based Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA). That is the most new coal-fired power capacity China has undertaken since 2016 and, says CREA, three times more than the rest of the world combined.

In fairness, China also leads the world in terms of installed wind and solar power, and investments in energy storage batteries, electric vehicles, and ultra-high transmission lines—all key elements for a clean energy transition. China has also pledged to peak related air emissions by 2030, and the Xi government has said it will drastically cut coal use in 2026 to meet that goal.

In the UN General Assembly vote that suspended Russia from the Human Rights Council, only ninety-three of one hundred and ninety-three members voted in favor of suspension.

Led by the U.S. and Europe, on April 7, the UN voted to suspend Russia from the Human Rights Council. While supporters cited the vote as evidence of “rallying the world” against Russia and its war on Ukraine, details suggest that more work is needed.

Ninety-three member nations voted in favor of suspension. But that means—despite plenty of evidence of human rights violations—that most of the General Assembly did not. In fact, if not for the abstention of 58 nations, supporters wouldn’t have been able to claim the two-thirds majority necessary for suspension. Twenty-four nations voted against the resolution.

North Korea has already conducted thirty-one missile tests this year, compared to 8 in all of 2021.

Hours after President Biden departed from his five-day trip to South Korea and Japan this May, North Korea fired three test missiles, one of which was a suspected ICBM (intercontinental ballistic missile). On June 5, North Korea launched another eight short-range missiles, the most it has launched in a single day. In 2022 alone, they have now launched 31 missile tests and are preparing to conduct a nuclear test, according to U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield—a steep increase from 2021’s eight.

Forty percent of the World Food Program’s wheat supplies come from Ukraine.

According to Ukraine’s ministry for agriculture, due to the Russian war on that country, approximately 22 million tons of grain are stranded in Ukraine waiting export. The broad implications are clear. As the UN Food and Agriculture Organization notes, Ukraine supplies up to 16% of the world’s corn exports and more than 40% of the world’s sunflower oil. A recent BBC report noted that Egypt and Bangladesh each get about one-quarter of their wheat from Ukraine. Moldova, already suffering from Russian occupation and the war’s fallout, gets over 90% of its wheat from Ukraine.

What isn’t receiving enough attention is what stranded Ukrainian grain means for the world’s poorest and most vulnerable. The price of wheat in Africa is up by 45%, reports the African Development Bank.
