A round-up of news and ways to take action from this June.

Dear John

Yesterday the Climate Change Committee (CCC) released the bad news we were all expecting – it's clear from its latest report the UK is falling woefully short of meeting its legally binding climate targets [1].

You can read our take here ([link removed]) . But the thing I really want to share today is some good news – actually lots of good news stories, about local people and their councils taking on the climate crisis themselves.

Because although the road ahead is steep, we must remind ourselves that it's not too late to meet our targets if we work together. And taking inspiration from positive stories is just as important as being ready to face the challenges.

First stop, a big success from Cheshire campaigners on Ellesmere Port.
LOCAL CHESHIRE CAMPAIGNERS TAKE ON FOSSIL FUELS – AND WIN!
[link removed]
Brilliant news from Cheshire this month.

At last, local residents and campaigners have successfully fought off plans for shale gas testing in Ellesmere Port. Energy company IGas’ appeal on its rejected proposal to “flow test” a well in the area – with the intention of scoping its fracking potential – has been turned down, once and for all.

This is the decision the Frack Free Dee coalition, as well as groups like Frack Free Ellesmere Port and Upton, and Friends of the Earth Chester & District have been waiting for nearly 3 years – it’s a real victory. And it’s particularly noteworthy that IGas’ appeal was rejected on climate grounds.

Find out why this is such a significant win for climate, community and local campaigning.

EARTHMOVERS CELEBRATES AMAZING GRASSROOTS ACTIVISTS
[link removed]

Like in Cheshire, up and down the country, people like you are campaigning for sustainable solutions to the global climate crisis – as part of our amazing network of grassroots Friends of the Earth groups.

Every year we take the time to celebrate their achievements with our annual Earthmovers awards. From the campaigners challenging plans for a coal mine in Cumbria to the race equality organisers turning derelict land into wildlife havens in Leicester, our Earthmovers are awarded for impactful work in their communities. Find out more about this year’s winners.

LOCAL COUNCILS LEADING ON CLIMATE ACTION
[link removed]
Tackling the climate crisis can start locally. But even though nearly 80% of councils have a climate action plan, putting plans into action can be a challenge – especially with limited funding.

So how are local authorities – and the people who live there – galvanising change in their communities? From reducing food waste in Bristol to tackling fuel poverty in North East Derbyshire, these 43 case studies explore the impacts, benefits and resources needed to take on climate change locally.

SHELL PROJECT GETS GREEN LIGHT – LET'S #STOPJACKDAW
[link removed]
Shell’s latest project in the North Sea off the coast of Scotland – the Jackdaw gas field – got the go-ahead this month. But Jackdaw won’t lower our energy bills. In fact, it’ll take years to start producing gas. And burning its gas will release more than half the annual emissions of Scotland.

Renewables and home insulation are the answer to the energy crisis, not more climate-wrecking fossil fuel projects.

As part of the coalition of groups that stopped the Cambo oil field, we’re campaigning to stop Jackdaw – and end all new fossil fuel extraction. Will you join us by adding your name to the petition?

HOW HAS THE ENERGY PRICE HIKE IMPACTED YOU?
Households were hit hard by skyrocketing energy prices in April. With another increase due this autumn, millions of us are facing an even harsher winter. We're campaigning for urgent government action to help those worst affected. And for real solutions – like insulating leaky homes and investing in renewable energy.

To have maximum impact we want to tell real stories about the effect that price rises are having on people. If you're happy to share your experience with us, please let us know at [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) . One of the team will then be in touch.
PEOPLE AND PLANET | GYPSY, ROMA AND TRAVELLER HISTORY MONTH
[link removed]
This past month was Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month – an important moment for us to show solidarity with GRT communities, who are directly targeted under the government’s new policing act.

The act includes a raft of authoritarian measures that both criminalise the way of life for nomadic people – and make it harder for all of us to speak up to power.

Here are some ways to learn more and stand with GRT communities all year round.
* Follow Friends, Families and Travellers ([link removed]) on social media.
* Support the campaign for Negotiated Stopping ([link removed]) calling on your local councillors to help GRT communities feel at home when moving through your neighbourhood.
* Take a few minutes to watch the Roads from the Past video ([link removed]) – a fantastic resource for improving education and raising awareness.

That’s all for this month, we’ll be back with another update soon.

Take care,

Aleanna Shaughnessy
