The House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence released the official findings from their investigation into the conduct of President Donald Trump, and the report confirmed much of what we had seen in the hearings: DONALD TRUMP ABUSED HIS OFFICE TO PUT HIS PERSONAL INTERESTS ABOVE THE UNITED STATES IN HIS DEALINGS WITH UKRAINE.
Trump circumvented professional diplomats and made it clear that desperately-needed American aid, as well as a White House meeting, would only come to Ukraine after investigations were launched into his political opponents.
The report ([link removed]) outlines not just the evidence of President Trump’s misconduct in his dealings with Ukraine, but also his obstruction into the House of Representatives’ investigation.
We will be considering both in the House Judiciary Committee, which is where the impeachment process is now. Despite all the media hype, I consider this an extremely somber task. In my role on the committee, I will be reviewing all of the evidence and helping shape the relevant articles of impeachment.
OUR FOUNDING FATHERS, WHO PENNED OUR CONSTITUTION, ENVISIONED A SITUATION LIKE THIS, FRIENDS. That is why they outlined an impeachment process that would provide a mechanism for the investigation -- and if necessary -- the removal of a President. We are now in the midst of that process and, as a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, I will be upholding the principles of checks and balances written into our Constitution.
BUT WHILE I AM ON THE FRONT LINE, WE ALL MUST DO OUR PART. No matter how draining the news can get, you must stay engaged. If you have friends and family who tune out of politics, make sure they know all the facts. Our very democracy is on the line, and it’s up to us to save it person-by-person.
