Dear John,

For most of recent history, there has been a prosperity gap between Atlantic Canada and the rest of Canada. Part of closing this gap involves cultivating a healthy private sector.

But according to a new Fraser Institute study out today, there is still much work to be done.

Nova Scotia ranks last among all Canadian provinces in per person private sector investment — a key driver of higher living standards and increased prosperity.

At the same time, government spending (federal, provincial and local) as a share of the overall economy was the highest in Nova Scotia.

The rest of the region didn't fare much better – all four Atlantic provinces had below-average shares of private sector employment.

Sincerely,

Niels Veldhuis
